Ever feel like your worth is attached to someone else's behavior? What they do or don't do for you? Or what you can or can't do for them? Codependency is when your sense of self-worth and identity starts to depend too much on someone else. Healthy relationships are mutually beneficial, providing love and support to both parties. Codependent relationships, on the other hand, are lopsided, casting one person in the role of constant caregiver. Over time, this dynamic can lead to emotional burnout, resentment, low self-esteem, and difficulty forming mutually healthy relationships. In a healthy relationship, both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity separate from the other person.
Codependency can start for many different reasons, often going back to your early life and the relationships you had growing up. For many people, codependency begins in childhood, particularly in environments marked by addiction, neglect, emotional volatility, or inconsistent caregiving. If you grew up in a home where one or both caregivers were emotionally unavailable, unpredictable, or overly dependent on you for support, you may have learned, consciously or not, that love and safety were earned by putting others’ needs before your own. Cultural messages, especially ones that tell you always to put others’ needs before your own, can also play a big role, especially for women. If you struggle with low self-esteem or have trouble setting boundaries, it can make you more likely to fall into codependent patterns in your relationships.

Barbara Jaurequi Counseling
Marriage and Family Therapist, MS, LMFT, MAC
Don't waste your life obsessing about the problems of someone else. Don't spend all your energy trying to control the behaviors of anyone. Codependency is a real addiction that masquerades as love. Love shouldn't hurt...love isn't self-destructive, but codependency is. This is an area of psychotherapy that I know VERY well. I will help you put the focus back on your own life - where it belongs. Nothing is more maddening than trying to do the impossible again and again only to fail again and again. That's codependency in a nut shell. The good news is that you can recover from codependency and learn to be happy. I use Reality Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy interventions to help you get your life back in order and I will teach you ways to change codependent patterns so you can make healthy, self-respecting choices for a better life.

Leila Tabatabaee
Psychologist, PhD
We learn the rules of love and relationship at a very young age. Often times the things we learn help us to survive our childhood environment. These same survival skills may not always continue to serve out adult relationships. Learning to relate and develop intimacy in a more healthy way can have a tremendous impact on the quality of your relationships and your life.

Julie Levin
Marriage and Family Therapist, MFT
When a family member struggles with addiction, mental illness, cognitive deficits or developmental differences, it’s normal to want to help. Codependency arises when we try to control the situation or the other person through care-taking. This happens a lot when the other person has impulse control or anger problems. We learn to overfunction and become hyper-responsible to compensate and make life a little more stable. Together we can look at new ways to find stability and ease so you don’t have to continue placating and people-pleasing. We can explore the boundaries that would give you true control - not trying to change the other person or get them to understand, but to decide what you will and won’t do, and then staying true to yourself.

Stephanie Brumfield
Therapist, LCSW
In my therapeutic practice, I address codependency as a complex interplay of emotional dynamics that often stems from deep-seated needs for approval, validation, and love. This pattern of behavior, while initially developed as a survival strategy in response to challenging relational environments, can lead to a loss of self-identity, boundary issues, and an overarching sense of dissatisfaction in one's relationships and personal life. Recognizing codependency as a sign of the soul's longing for genuine connection and self-realization, I offer a compassionate space for individuals to explore and understand these patterns, fostering a journey towards healing and autonomy.
The focus of our work together is on unraveling the layers of codependency, identifying its roots in past experiences, and understanding its impact on current relationships and self-perception. By cultivating self-awareness and self-compassion, clients are guided towards reclaiming their independence, establishing healthier boundaries, and developing a stronger sense of self-worth. This transformative process not only improves relationships with others but also deepens the connection to oneself, enabling a life lived with more authenticity and fulfillment.
Emphasizing the importance of personal growth and empowerment, my approach seeks to empower individuals to break free from the cycles of codependency, leading to a life marked by healthier relationships, emotional resilience, and a profound sense of inner freedom. Together, we work to create a future where one can engage in relationships not out of neediness or fear, but from a place of strength, wholeness, and genuine love.
