Heidi Hartston
Psychologist, PhD
I have several decades of experience working with OCD, intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, unwanted images, reassurance seeking and relationship OCD. Although it can be a devastating experience and can cause a traumatic level of anxiety, OCD is very responsive to the right specialized treatments. I can help you individually to empower your true wise mind and to quiet the doubting voice. I can also help with families or parents who are navigating how to distinguish helping a child with OCD versus enabling. And I can work with couples where relationship OCD or another type of OCD may be causing a rift. I combine insightful, caring depth work with evidence based techniques like exposure and response prevention (E&RP) and CBT that effectively free you from obsessive-compulsive patterns, and help you to reclaim the balanced, happy life you deserve. Alyssa Habschmidt
Therapist, AMFT
You feel trapped in a cycle of intrusive thoughts or repetitive behaviors. Your mind feels out of control. You might replay conversations, repeat certain words or phrases, constantly check for danger, or struggle to quiet thoughts that won't go away. If you live with obsessive thoughts or repetitive behaviors, you already know how exhausting and draining it can be. Even though you know the worries aren't logical, they still feel consuming and impossible to control.
OCD often develops as a way to cope with deeper fears, emotions, or unresolved experiences. The thoughts and behaviors may serve as an attempt to create safety, certainty, or relief from emotional discomfort—even if they ultimately leave you feeling stuck or fearful.
Together, we will help you gain clarity and understand your fears. From understanding, you can then move forward with self-awareness and develop greater autonomy in how you react to your thoughts and feelings. You gain greater control over your mind, hence allowing you to shift your behavior and break free from the obsessive thinking and repetitive behaviors. I provide a warm, safe, and collaborative space to explore your relationship to OCD and help you gain relief from it.

OCD falls under the anxiety umbrella. Often it actually begins as a coping technique to help manage anxiety but can then take on a life of its own. As a result, new ways to manage anxiety in addition to methods to decreasing OCD behavior and thoughts are required to overcome OCD.

Dr. Daniele Levy, Bay Area Cognitive Therapy
Psychologist, PhD, MBA
In treating OCD, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with a focus on exposure and response prevention (ERP). This involves gradually confronting fears without engaging in compulsive behaviors, helping clients break the cycle of obsession and compulsion. Together, we challenge the irrational thoughts that drive your OCD, developing healthier responses and promoting greater flexibility around your thoughts and behaviors. My goal is to help you reduce the power OCD has in your life, improving your ability to function with confidence and calm.

When Your Mind Won’t Stop Looping
If you live with obsessive thoughts or repetitive behaviors, you probably already know how exhausting it can be. You might spend hours replaying what you said, checking if something bad might happen, or trying to get rid of thoughts that won’t leave you alone. Even though you know the worries aren’t logical, they still feel impossible to control. OCD isn’t about being “neat” or “organized.” It’s about anxiety that latches onto what matters most to you — your safety, your relationships, your values — and tricks your brain into thinking you need to keep checking or fixing something to feel okay.
In our work together, we’ll use a structured, evidence-based approach that combines TEAM-CBT with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) — the gold-standard treatment for OCD. You’ll learn how to:
Break free from obsessive loops by gently facing feared thoughts instead of avoiding them
Reduce compulsions and checking behaviors step by step, in a safe, guided way
Calm the anxiety that drives the urge to control or neutralize uncertainty
Understand and retrain the beliefs that keep OCD patterns alive
Build confidence in your ability to handle discomfort without giving in to rituals
Our sessions are structured, compassionate, and active. You’ll track progress weekly and practice small daily exercises that teach your brain new patterns of safety and trust. Over time, what once felt unbearable starts to lose its power.
I BELIEVE:
OCD doesn’t define you — it’s a pattern your brain learned, and it can learn new ones.
Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s doing what matters while fear is present.
Recovery happens one small exposure at a time, not in giant leaps.
You deserve freedom from the constant “what ifs” that steal your peace.
Humor and self-compassion are essential tools in healing — not luxuries.
Also Integrated In Our Work:
• Interpersonal Work – to strengthen connection and empower you to be yourself using The 5 Secrets of Effective Communication
• Mindful Self-Compassion – to cultivate a gentler, kinder inner voice through the work of Dr. Kristin Neff
• Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM) – to regulate the nervous system and support trauma recovery alongside cognitive tools for a well-rounded approach

Life Coach, view my credentials online at: www.recoveringfromwithin.com/credentialslongform
OCD is interesting in that it could have trauma based origins, physiological origins, including epigenetic, or could be an adaptive response to something that is currently challenging. First is to decipher where the origin is as best as one can, in general an integrative and functional approach may work well, as it could be based in metabolic deficiency, for example.
Shared with care: in certain cases, we have witnessed it might evolve in people or communities where power abuse is rampant -- these compulsions can set in as ways to adapt to holding maladaptive and abusive thinking and distracting a person from the inhumanity and incoherence of the abusive thinking they have been groomed to take on. This is not written about from a hegemonic perspective, however decolonizing theory will find these challenges of OCD and even paranoia heightened in people or communities that habituate enacting atrocities. This is not trauma it is an expression of intensive moral injury and benefits from interrupting the moral injury and moving the person into ethical recovery of their humanity.
Contrapositively, trauma impactees may show OCD traits as a way of the mind distracting from torture or other forms of recurring harm psychologically (e.g repeated and intensive gaslighting), physically, sexually...etc. Here we would apply a trauma based approach to care along with Havening, Brainspotting and other ways to soothe a nervous system and restore mental networks as best we can/
