You already have displayed such a beautiful expression of courage by seeking out support. In the beginning of therapy, we’ll build on this courage by identifying what is working for you in life right now, bringing in new resources to expand the sense of safety to live and connect. Then slowly taking little tastes of deeper, painful work, we’ll move back and forth, allowing your full being to embrace this new way of living without the added weight of judgment or pressure to live any one way. We’ll consider the stories and thoughts, the emotions, the images and picture memories, as well as, the groans, pains, and numbness of your body that are charged by fight-flight-freeze-faint energy. We’ll honor all parts of you as we work together to engage all the rules of safety and connection that you’ve learned through past experiences. We’ll consider what is and is not working well for you now, and, we’ll identify new purposes for these parts of you that honor your living and connecting now.

Santa Monica, California therapist: Timothy Walker, marriage and family therapist
PTSD/Trauma

Timothy Walker

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
Trauma, and the potential diagnosis of PTSD, can stem from a variety of experiences. Sometimes it is acute trauma, a singular event, forever burned within our being, that follows us in everything we do. Sometimes it is complex or chronic trauma, a series of events or exposures that eventually broke down our ability to remain intact of body, mind or spirit. Trauma can be healed. The parts of ourselves that were harmed can be welcomed back within the larger self, forgiven. The scars will always be there, there is no time machine that can change what has happened. Yet with integration, we can rebuild our inner world to something whole, and alive.

Making sense of trauma, and the impact of trauma, can be accompanied by the fear that you will never be able to overcome the distress you feel when you remember the experience or when those intrusive nightmares, flashbacks, and negative thoughts come crashing into your awareness. Through trauma-focused therapy we reclaim confidence, hopefulness, intimacy, safety, self-esteem, and trust. I have specific expertise in treating trauma symptoms related to sexual assault, intimate partner violence and emotional abuse, military sexual trauma (MST), childhood and complex sexual trauma, violence, and combat trauma experienced by Veterans. These experiences can impact physical health, and daily life. Many people will experience a form of trauma in their lives. Trauma can come with feelings of shame, anger, and confusion. Posttraumatic stress is a normal human reaction to traumatic events. However, for some individuals this stress persists and interferes with their ability to live the life that they want. I work with complex cases that sometimes include dissociation, numbness, anger, risky behaviors, and years of avoidance. The treatments I provide are the most powerful and effective treatments available for these conditions. I have expertise in individual, as well as relationship (i.e., with a partner) based trauma-focused therapies. I have experienced many times how these treatments help people gain new perspectives about what happened to them, develop a sense of empowerment over their trauma, and improve their lives. These treatments can also be helpful if you feel stuck following experiences of trauma, even if you don’t have PTSD. If you’re unsure whether you want to discuss your trauma, or unsure which approach feels like a good fit for you, we can discuss your concerns. We will explore trauma-focused care that builds upon your current support, coping skills, and personal experience. I primarily employ time-limited, evidence-based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT) such as CPT, PE, and CBCT. (See Individual and Couples Therapy based Trauma-Focused Services.) In psychological literature, stressors are defined as events and conditions (e.g., losing a job, death of an intimate partner) that cause change and require that the individual adapt to the new situation or life circumstance. Stress processes can include the experience of prejudice events, expectations of rejection, hiding and concealing your authentic self, internalized homophobia, intimate partner violence, discrimination, and ameliorative coping processes that have become bad, ineffective habits. These experiences can be particularly painful when there is social pressure to conceal your experiences, or stigma. I address what it’s like to have no one to talk to about these experiences, and any distress that comes from having nowhere to do this work safely. I practice LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy that considers the impact of minority stress and chronic stress responses. Aside from these stress processes, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and heterosexuals who report any same-sex sexual partners over their lifetime, have greater risk of childhood maltreatment, interpersonal violence, trauma to a close friend or relative, and unexpected death of someone close.

Trauma and PTSD are so incredibly common and underrecognized. People often go decades in their lives with undiagnosed PTSD and trauma without even realizing it. It is important to unveil the traumatic experiences we have gone through in our lives. Some people can experience trauma and not develop PTSD. I specialize in treating individuals who have experienced chronic relational trauma, sometimes referred to as complex PTSD. Complex relational trauma results in problems in sustaining healthy intimate relationships, difficulty in trusting others, and disorganized attachment bonds. I also work with individuals who have suffered a singular traumatic experience, such as witnessing a homicide, or surviving a loved one's suicide. These experiences are sometimes called traumatic grief. You may have witnessed an accident, been involved in a natural disaster, or survived a war or difficult migration and be experiencing intrusive thoughts, memories, or dreams about that most distressing and demanding experience. We can work together to process these unbearable experiences with great care and sensitivity, at a pace that is comfortable for you.

Trauma takes a physical and mental toll on a person. Trauma can render you tied up in a knot, unable to get free. Children experience and understand trauma differently from adults. They do not have the vocabulary to express their distress, so they act out. If your child is experiencing difficulty sleeping, have nightmares, being emotional and hypervigilant, therapy can be very helpful in reducing symptoms. I use play therapy, art to help children express their thoughts and feelings and teach them coping mechanisms to calm down, relax. Trauma in adults looks a bit different. You might feel hopeless, helpless, unable to stop the flashbacks and nightmares. It might be hard to work or maintain relationships. It might result in substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, or risky behaviors. Don't wait to get help. You can break free from trauma and live a happy, satisfying life.

My approach is trauma-informed and grounded in evidence-based treatments, helping you gently work through painful experiences while building skills to regulate emotions and feel more in control. Trauma can affect the way people experience emotions, relationships, safety, identity, and the world around them long after traumatic events have ended. Remembering that psychological trauma and secondary trauma are connected to fears, negative attachments of unattended emotional memories of past events, it is important to remind yourself that the trauma is over; you have survived it. Take the time to externalize painful emotions. Re-evaluating and perspective of the past can heal the present, leading to a more positive time for the future.
