Depression can affect every part of life, including motivation, energy, self-worth, relationships, hope, and your ability to feel connected to yourself or the world around you. It can leave you feeling flat, overwhelmed, numb, stuck, or exhausted by simply getting through the day. My approach is compassionate, thoughtful, and grounded in understanding your inner world rather than reducing you to a diagnosis. Together, we can make sense of what may be sitting underneath the depression and help life feel more manageable and meaningful.

The Black Dog is what Winston Churchill called it. A disorder that causes immense suffering. The scientific evidence is that talking therapy is as good at treating depression as medication. The difference is of course that you don't have side-effects and the gains you make in therapy last you a lifetime. With medication when you stop taking it, the effect obviously stops too. I would like to meet with you to see what can be done to help you. This will enable us to get to know each other and see if we can work together. It’s important for you to work with someone you trust and feel safe with.

Depression isn’t laziness or weakness—it’s a signal from parts of you that feel exhausted, hopeless, or unseen. If you're feeling numb, unmotivated, or like you’re moving through life in a fog, I see you. Depression often arises when parts of us carry heavy emotional burdens or feel like they’ve been carrying the weight of the world for too long. Using Internal Family Systems (IFS) and somatic tools like TRE, I help you gently connect with these parts—not to fix or force change, but to understand, unburden, and heal. There is a way back to energy, purpose, and joy. You don’t have to do it alone.

Depression

Registered Psychotherapist, MA psych, Dip SW
Depression isn't sadness. It's exhaustion. It's going through the motions while feeling nothing. It's knowing you should care about things but not being able to feel it. It's functioning on the outside while being completely disconnected on the inside. Some people describe it as numbness, others as a heavy weight they can't shake. Either way, it makes life feel pointless even when objectively things are fine. That disconnect is what we need to understand. Depression often isn't about what's happening now—it's about patterns that got laid down years ago. We work to understand where the disconnection started, what purpose it served then, and why it's still running now. Then we can start changing it. This isn't about positive thinking or forcing yourself to feel better. It's about understanding why your system shut down, and gently helping it come back online.

In modern society, the word depression is used to describe experiences ranging from low mood and sadness to a complete inability to function. Depression can manifest as extreme fatigue, cognitive dysfunction and suicidal thoughts. Statistics tell us that one in six to a quarter of us will suffer from mild to severe depression at some point in our lives. Mild to severe depression can last from a few days to many years. Often there are no clear-cut manifestations of the depression that outsiders can observe, and this compounds the problem because people don’t understand what you are experiencing. No two people’s experience of depression is exactly the same, and it can be very difficult to understand why the symptoms are even present much less what to do about it. Having experienced depression firsthand, I know what the experience is like and how debilitating it can be. I have now successfully treated sufferers of depression for over 20 years and have drawn heavily on my personal experience and the lessons it taught me. Depression symptoms can manifest themselves in many different ways and can also increase gradually over time making them harder to detect in the early stages. The symptoms can be wide-ranging and the symptoms can appear to be constant and relentless. Your symptom experiences may well include: low mood hopelessness lack of motivation confusion and a sense of being lost or stuck loss of appetite, weight loss, or weight gain cognitive dysfunction – ‘brain fog’, inability to concentrate and memory loss sleep disturbance loss of pleasure and interest in life agitation fatigue and lack of energy suicidal thoughts weakness aches and pains Loss of libido I’d like to be very clear, we often think that when we experience symptoms there is something wrong with our brain. While this can be the case, a more useful way of looking at symptoms for the condition of depression, is that your body is seeking to get your attention, to let you know that something is not quite right. You are NOT broken, your body is working perfectly normally, it is simply alerting you to the fact that you’ve become disconnected from YOU and something needs to change. Opening up to a new understanding and making that change is well within your own capability.

I work with adults experiencing depression, including persistent low mood, loss of motivation, emotional numbness, or a sense of disconnection from themselves and their lives. Depression often develops in response to long-standing patterns, life events, or internal pressures, and can narrow perspective over time. My work draws on Integrative Art Psychotherapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS), offering ways to understand how depressive states are organised internally and what they may be responding to. Rather than focusing on quick solutions or positive thinking, the work centres on making sense of experience and gently widening possibilities. Sessions may involve conversation, creative exploration, or a combination of both, depending on what feels most useful.
