Atlanta, Georgia therapist: Alena Porter, licensed professional counselor
Emotional Abuse

Alena Porter

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC, NCC
When a person is in a relationship, personal or professional, it is sometimes hard for that person to notice emotional abuse until it becomes severe or someone else notices that it is happening. This is not the client's fault, emotional abuse usually starts very subtly with harsh comments or shutting down but these behaviors are often attributed to a bad day. Over time when a person hears harsh comments enough times they start to believe them. Therapy for emotional abuse is in part helping client's recognize emotional abuse and try to set boundaries, if it is safe to do so. Then we will work to desensitize, reframe, and replace those harsh comments with positive beliefs while increasing the client's sense of self-worth.

Emotional Abuse

Dr. Andrew Bingman

Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, PsyD
Many clients who have experienced emotional abuse will internalize abusive messages about themselves, resulting in low self-esteem and a reduced sense of self-worth. I work with clients to help identify the source of harmful beliefs they hold about themselves and to help foster and develop an alternative view of themselves that is affirming and empowering.

Emotional abuse is subtle but may lead to major consequences and destructive relationships. Emotional abuse may have its roots in traumatic experiences and might not be serving your purpose in this season. This pattern does not change until the abusive cycle is broken. You may contact me if you are seeking to break from emotional abuse and form new goals and a new vision. If you are in an abusive and violent relationship, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or if you need immediate help, call 911.

Emotional abuse can leave lasting imprints on self-esteem, boundaries, and the capacity to trust. Birmingham carries one of the most significant civil rights legacies of any American city — the site of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing and pivotal moments in the fight for racial justice — and this history creates a distinctive context in which racial identity, historical trauma, and community resilience are active themes in local therapy culture. The city is home to UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham), one of the country's premier academic medical centers, which anchors significant mental health research, training, and clinical infrastructure. Birmingham's African American community — which comprises a majority of the city's population — drives strong demand for culturally affirming therapists who understand racial trauma and intergenerational resilience. The broader Birmingham metro's mix of healthcare, finance, and manufacturing industries creates diverse occupational therapy demand across a metropolitan area larger than the city itself.
