Men’s Issues

Russ Webb - Insight Counselling Services

Counsellor/Therapist, MA, CT, RPC, MPCC
There are many kinds of issues that might be considered a men's issue. Men have been acculturated differently than women. And many men have been acculturated in ways that lead to many kinds of problems. Acculturation is the process of what we have learned growing up from our families, teachers, coaches, peers, and even Hollywood about what it means to be a man. It places pressure and limitations on our lives in so many ways. Many issues then arise from this such as problems in our relationship with ourselves, negative thinking patterns, difficulties dealing with failure, inability to seek help or support, difficulty talking about feelings, not knowing how to process our feelings, difficulties knowing how to measure success in our lives, being unable to connect with other men in meaningful ways (and even our partners), and so much more. When men have experienced trauma (whether at work or in childhood, emotional, physical, or sexual) there can be intense pressure to try and contain it, control it, and push it out of their minds. These are all men's issues that can be helpful to address with another male to help break down the walls of isolation that so often can happen between men.

Men’s Issues

Masculinity and our relationship with it can colour a great many of our psychological experiences. It may form a core piece of our individual identity; broaden or constrain our opportunities for connecting with others; and/or influence the kinds of objectives that we set for ourselves in life. As an integrative therapist who is existentially-informed, I'm always interested to explore what masculinity means to my male (cis and trans) and gender-fluid clients, especially if they themselves define it as a theme of interest.
