Julie Taylor Counselling
Counsellor/Therapist, MTC, RCS
There is a lot of talk about forgiveness these days. A popular notion is that we must forgive if we want to move forward but I find this a little confusing? I think to forgive oneself is important. Mega important. To understand why we do the things we do - and why someone else did to us what they did to us - is also important. But... Is it really up to us to judge and forgive someone else for their actions? Do we have that responsibility? We can hear their apology if one is forthcoming. But our responsibility is to ourselves (and to our young children). I believe we are free to choose how we wish to move forward and create our life from this moment. We are each of us, as adults, responsible for our own actions. People who have hurt us in some way are responsible for themselves. If forgiving is important to us, we can explore that. However Dr Rosenberg said that in order to be happy we must get to know ourselves, understand our needs and arrange our lives so that those needs are met. Our loved ones will naturally benefit from our happiness. (Of course we should never hurt anyone physically either, other than in self defence.)

Forgive the person and not the behaviour while still having healthy boundaries and not allowing abuse to continue. When people violate in various ways they are acting from their unconscious wounds and anxieties and are not healthy to be around. Lack of forgiveness negatively affects your health.

Selah Counselling, Mediation, and Training Center
Registered Social Worker, BSW, MSW, RSW
If you are wrestling with forgiveness, you may feel torn between wanting peace and still carrying hurt. You might replay what happened, struggle with anger, or feel pressured by others to “just move on.” Forgiveness can feel confusing, especially if the wound was deep or trust was broken.
At Selah Counselling, we approach forgiveness with honesty and care. We do not rush the process or minimize the pain. Forgiveness is not pretending something did not happen, and it is not the same as reconciliation or removing healthy boundaries. Together, we explore the impact of the hurt, strengthen emotional regulation, and help you process grief and anger safely. Over time, forgiveness can release what no longer serves you, freeing you from carrying what was never yours to hold forever. The goal is clarity, strength, and peace that grows from truth rather than pressure.
