Dr. Maxwell Rappoport
Psychologist, Ph.D.
For obsessive-compulsive disorder, I primarily use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold-standard treatment for OCD, often combined with CBT and Mindfulness strategies. This work helps reduce compulsive behaviors, loosen the grip of intrusive thoughts, and restore freedom in daily life.

OCD is interesting in that it could have trauma based origins, physiological origins, including epigenetic, or could be an adaptive response to something that is currently challenging. First is to decipher where the origin is as best as one can, in general an integrative and functional approach may work well, as it could be based in metabolic deficiency, for example.
Shared with care: in certain cases, we have witnessed it might evolve in people or communities where power abuse is rampant -- these compulsions can set in as ways to adapt to holding maladaptive and abusive thinking and distracting a person from the inhumanity and incoherence of the abusive thinking they have been groomed to take on. This is not written about from a hegemonic perspective, however decolonizing theory will find these challenges of OCD and even paranoia heightened in people or communities that habituate enacting atrocities. This is not trauma it is an expression of intensive moral injury and benefits from interrupting the moral injury and moving the person into ethical recovery of their humanity.
Contrapositively, trauma impactees may show OCD traits as a way of the mind distracting from torture or other forms of recurring harm psychologically (e.g repeated and intensive gaslighting), physically, sexually...etc. Here we would apply a trauma based approach to care along with Havening, Brainspotting and other ways to soothe a nervous system and restore mental networks as best we can/

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a control issue that is used to compensate for the fact that a person feels completely out of control. This disorder can have physiological consequences that can cause physical harm and results in lower seratonin levels in the body. As we support you in reducing anxiety and stresses and increasing your sense of control over multiple aspects of your life, you can begin to experience a reduction in your OCD tendencies and/or find it easier to manage them.

Heidi Hartston
Psychologist, PhD
I have several decades of experience working with OCD, intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, unwanted images, reassurance seeking and relationship OCD. Although it can be a devastating experience and can cause a traumatic level of anxiety, OCD is very responsive to the right specialized treatments. I can help you individually to empower your true wise mind and to quiet the doubting voice. I can also help with families or parents who are navigating how to distinguish helping a child with OCD versus enabling. And I can work with couples where relationship OCD or another type of OCD may be causing a rift. I combine insightful, caring depth work with evidence based techniques like exposure and response prevention (E&RP) and CBT that effectively free you from obsessive-compulsive patterns, and help you to reclaim the balanced, happy life you deserve. Pasadena is home to Caltech and the Huntington Hospital, and the city's intellectual, academic culture creates demand for therapists experienced in working with high-achievers navigating perfectionism, burnout, and the psychological demands of elite academic and scientific environments. The city's established residential character and proximity to Los Angeles give it a distinct therapy landscape — less entertainment-focused than West Hollywood, more oriented toward depth work, relationships, and long-term growth. Pasadena also has a significant older adult population, with therapists specializing in aging, life review, and elder family dynamics well represented. Many practices serve clients drawn from across the San Gabriel Valley and Foothill communities.
