Tandra Froehlich Childress

Marriage and Family Therapist, ATR, LMFT
I have worked with children and teens in multiple settings (mother, mentor, therapist). I am in awe of what strong young adults our youth are developing into. In these positions, I have noticed the many challenges they face. The teen and preteen years are confusing. Youth must figure out who they are, where they belong, and what they want to be. In addition to this feat, youth are challenged with a competitive academic environment and the constant watchful eye of social media. This can create intense stress and feelings that nobody is real. It is no wonder then, that anxiety and depression are increasing. As a therapist, I aide youth in discovering their passions, increasing self-esteem, calming anxieties, and finding their unique voice. Modern day society weighs heavy on our youth. With an understanding heart and open mind it is my passion to help carry that weight.

Los Angeles, California therapist: Brooke Taylor, pre-licensed professional
Child/Teen

Brooke Taylor

Pre-Licensed Professional, MA, AMFT
Adolescence is a real developmental upheaval, not just a phase to get through. Identity is under construction, friendships carry enormous weight, the relationship with parents is being renegotiated whether anyone agreed to it or not, and all of it is happening in a body and brain that are still changing. Most teens handle a lot of this on their own. Sometimes they need more support than the people around them can give. I work with teens on the ordinary-but-hard parts of this stage: friendship conflict and social pressure, questions about who they are and where they belong, school stress and perfectionism, self-esteem, screens and comparison, conflict at home, first relationships, and the general sense of being off without knowing why. A lot of what makes this work is having one adult who isn't grading them, parenting them, or trying to fix them. Therapy gives your teen a space that's theirs, where they can think out loud and be met with curiosity instead of correction. That often changes things at home too, not because we're working on you, but because a teen who feels less alone tends to have more room for everyone around them.

If being a parent in 2022 is difficult, being a kid in 2022 is near impossible. I am passionate about working with children and adolescents in close collaboration with parents/care-givers to assist in a myriad of issues, including anxiety, depression, school avoidance, bullying, self-esteem, divorce, co-parenting, and trauma. I utilize a unique combination of interactive play therapy, relational therapy, and EMDR (if appropriate) in order to give your child the most effective therapy experience.

San Mateo is a Bay Area city on the Peninsula between San Francisco and Silicon Valley, part of one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world, and home to a large proportion of technology industry workers whose work-related stressors—alongside the intense financial pressure of Peninsula housing costs—shape much of the local mental health demand. The city has a significant East and Southeast Asian population, including large Filipino and Chinese-American communities, for whom culturally competent therapy that addresses specific cultural dynamics around family, stigma, and identity is an important consideration. A well-developed private therapy sector serves the affluent professional community, and telehealth has extended the effective therapy market across the Bay Area. Common therapy concerns include tech industry burnout, housing cost anxiety and financial stress, Asian-American identity and family dynamics, relationship difficulties, and the paradox of acute psychological distress in an objectively privileged material environment.
