Trauma and PTSD

Christian Holmes

Marriage and Family Therapist, M.A., Associate Marriage and Family Therapist
Trauma can feel so overwhelming. It has a way of infecting every area of one's life. In my work with those who experience trauma I take a collaborative approach where we assess and address the trauma from all angles. We use talk therapy to process what has gone unaddressed and discover together the meaning made and the effect it had on you in your relationship with yourself and others. I also use evidence-based practices like EMDR and TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral) Therapy which allows us to address cognitive distortions and negative beliefs you hold about yourself so that you can overcome the pain and suffering and experience more joy and freedom.

Trauma is what happens when we experience something that is overwhelming or life-threatening. Sexual or physical abuse, neglect, accidents, natural disasters, crime, loss of loved ones... All of these things can leave a mark. Our brain responds to trauma the way it has for thousands and thousands of years. And while that helped us survive in more primitive times, today it can leave us unable to function, riddled with fear and anxiety, avoiding the very things that used to bring us pleasure. At its worse, trauma becomes Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. The good news is that the field of psychology, through the use of brain imaging, has developed powerful treatment approaches to the resolution of trauma and PTSD. The field of Somatic Psychology has been a hotbed for the development of effective treatments including EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing, and Sensori-Motor Psychotherapy. With 25 years of experience, training in many of these approaches, and both an MA and Ph.D. in Somatic Psychology, I am eager to help you recover from the devastating impact of trauma.

Trauma has a specific and undeniable impact on our brain and nervous system. This impact ripples into the way we feel about ourselves, our relationships and the world. Learning strategies to mitigate and re-wire the impact of trauma can empower us to feel greater safety, ease, confidence and connection.

PTSD generally refers to a reaction to a single traumatic event. A memory of the event, conscious or unconscious, rises up and the person believes that it is happening now. Battlefield trauma is the clearest example of this. CPTSD (Complex Post traumatic Stress Disorder) refers to a stress disorder linked to sustained patterns of abuse, trauma and neglect. Sometimes the roots of the trauma are obvious, but not always. There is inter-generational trauma, intrauterine trauma, medical trauma and religious trauma for example. Trauma knows no time. When we are triggered, the pain and discomfort can be as real as it was when the initial events occurred. Exploring whatever adverse experiences occurred in early life, adulthood or in past generations can help you achieve a freedom from these trauma reactions. To help resolve them, I use EMDR, CBT, hypnotherapy and somatic techniques.

Traumatic events are, sadly, common. What determines whether someone develops PTSD often has less to do with the event itself and more to do with what happens afterward—especially whether they had support or were left alone in the aftermath. One of the most powerful elements of trauma therapy is breaking that original aloneness: having another person bear witness in a safer, regulated way. Trauma lives in the body and nervous system. Many parents who are deeply committed to ending cycles of violence are shocked to find themselves reacting in ways they swore they never would. Under stress or overstimulation, unprocessed trauma stored in the nervous system can resurface, driving reactions that feel out of character and hard to control. I use an integrative approach to treating trauma and PTSD. EMDR, for example, can help reconcile the gap between what someone knows intellectually and what they feel emotionally. A survivor of sexual abuse may understand cognitively that it was not her fault, yet still carry deep shame. EMDR supports the integration of that knowing so it becomes embodied and emotionally real. Brainspotting works directly with trauma stored in the nervous system and body, targeting the physiological states where overwhelming experiences are held. By accessing these deeper layers, it often brings meaningful insight and relief without relying solely on talk. IFS approaches trauma with compassion for protective parts—such as dissociation—that developed to help someone survive. Rather than pathologizing these responses, we understand their purpose and gently help clients release self-punishing beliefs or repetitive reenactments that once felt necessary but no longer serve them. ISTDP helps release unconscious rage, guilt, and grief tied to those loved ones who caused harm—allowing for greater freedom and relief from longstanding defenses that perpetuated suffering.

PTSD requires lots of patience as the individual in treatment learns to interact with the world again. Traumatic experiences shut down everything in the person's mind/body, and in their social interactions, and create a lot of isolation. To counter all this, I recommend a unique program for each patient that includes talking at least twice a week, micro-stimulation to develop new pathways in the brain, supplements to heal the brain, music therapy (see Steven Halpern), sleep therapy, and the creation of "flow experiences" to strengthen the person's sense of self. Trauma is not easy to turn around, But, over a consistent period of time, expressing one's emotions and following a set routine (including the above), will always lead to healing.
