Anxiety is an intelligent strategy that usually helps us stay above deeper feelings that we are afraid to connect with. I help people to connect with the wisdom of anxious energy, while creating safety to be with what's underneath.

Using mindfulness-based modalities, I help clients turn toward, instead of operate out of avoidance. We (slowly) turn toward that which we try to control and instead find freedom in the bravery and letting go. I have worked with and specialize in anxiety disorders.

Anxiety or Fears

Elinor Nygren Szapiro

Licensed Professional Counselor, MA LPC, EMDR II, Brainspotting Certification, Hypnotherapy
Anxiety is one of the most uncomfortable emotions to be living with. Anxiety can take various forms, such as fears about particular situations or concerns about the future; or it can also be pervasive or 'free floating', like a continuous undercurrent in our lives. The good news, though, is that anxiety can be successfully treated in psychotherapy and clients can find a lot of relief. Much of our anxiety is caused by our thoughts and the 'stories' we tell ourselves, which are then mirrored in our body and create 'butterflies', intense tension and stress. I teach my clients tools to 'work with' and relate to their anxious thoughts so that the thoughts lose their strength and dissipate. I also help clients to clear the anxiety and discomfort they are holding in their bodies. These tools can be done 'on the fly' as you go about your day and are very effective. Learning to work with your thoughts and body sensations provides tremendous relief and is quite empowering.

Boulder, Colorado therapist: David Redbord, registered psychotherapist
Anxiety or Fears

David Redbord

Registered Psychotherapist, MA, MPH, LPCC
If you’re feeling anxious, it’s because you’re living in the future. If you’re at peace it’s because you’re living in the present.” – Lao Tzu Anxiety happens as a result of future thinking; thinking about things that haven’t happened yet or may not even happen. Our mind gets caught up in a thought loop and we start to feel anxious as the loop continues. Preventing anxiety happens by using mindfulness to come back to the present moment through focusing on on your breath, body, or environment. When you’re feeling anxious, you can notice where you feel the sensation of the anxiety in your body. If you stay present with that sensation, it will often change and move and the anxiety will pass. I’d be honored to help you use mindfulness to prevent and work with anxiety so you can return to relaxation and feel better.

Anxiety CAN be an opportunity to create your dream life. Anxiety often shows up alerting us to potential dangers. Maybe anxiety uses the past to remind you when something went wrong. This anxiety is working to keep you safe in the future. Or maybe you have so many fears about the future, how life will turn out, fears about not having enough money, worries about losing your job. One worry running into another worry until your mind is filled with angst and your body on edge. Living in this anxious space can be exhausting. Yet, anxiety is filled with energy, doing anything to help calm the fears. When we can hold anxiety in front of you something magical can happen. You can see what has been so pent up inside looking for a way out. Then you CAN deeply understand what the anxiety is doing for you and we can help the anxiety find a new way to express itself. There is a powerful message in the anxiety. Together we can uncover the message and you can live more calmly.
