Maggie Reynolds
Licensed Professional Counselor, LCPC, EMDR Certified, NCC
Trauma is not about an event, but about the impact it has on you. It is a wound of the body and mind that hasn't healed or keeps getting reopened when you are triggered. You may have suffered a single event trauma (like a car accident, assault, or death of a loved one) or a series of painful incidents (like being abused as a child or as an adult or longstanding struggles in your academic or career endeavors or friendships). I can help you process what happened and stop feeling haunted or stuck by your past and live more fully and confidently in your present. In addition to regular talk therapy, I offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an effective and well-researched treatment for PTSD and trauma, as well as somatic movement, expressive arts, Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment, and attachment-focused therapies to help my clients heal and transform.

Danielle Keys at Headway
Licensed Mental Health Counselor, M.S.ED, LCPC
Trauma is sometimes unknown or related to a specific event in one's life. During the assessment, you'll be asked specific questions in order to capture if there is trauma known in your life. Sometimes trauma is carried around through no fault of the client, however, the client has to choose to do something about it. I use Person-Centered, Dialectical Behavior, or Trauma-Focused CBT approaches with clients. The goal is to help client's express themselves without judgement, to be heard, validated, and encouraged to make choices to minimize and accept certain types of distress.

Sometimes bad things happen, and trauma can affect many parts of your life. Trauma is when something really scary or hurtful happens, and it can change how you feel and think. It can make you feel anxious, stuck, or overwhelmed. When we experience trauma, our bodies and minds remember it in ways that can make us feel on edge, even when we’re safe.
If you’re struggling with trauma or PTSD, you’re not alone—I’m here to help. It’s normal to feel a mix of emotions like fear, sadness, or anger. In our counseling sessions, we’ll create a safe space where you can talk about your experiences and feelings at your own pace. Together, we’ll work to understand how trauma has affected you and find ways to help you heal and move forward. With support, you can start to feel better, build strength, and find hope for the future.

There are three main types of trauma: Acute, Chronic, or Complex. Acute trauma results from a single incident. Chronic trauma is repeated and prolonged such as domestic violence or abuse. Complex trauma is exposure to varied and multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive, interpersonal nature. Sometimes people experience post traumatic responses to adverse childhood experiences, a single event or living as marginalized identities in our society. That is, some people experience trauma response by dealing with recurring microaggressions, discrimination, bullying from individuals, communities and macro aggressions such as systemic oppression. We need to consider the impact traumatic experiences have on our mind, body and overall experience as a human navigating uncertain and challenging times.

Tara Thompson
Licensed Professional Counselor, MS, LPC
Experiencing trauma/PTSD can really affect people with addictions, relationship problems, or depression. For example, someone who's been through a tough experience might start using drugs or alcohol to cope. Trauma/PTSD can also make relationships harder and can make depression worse. To help someone dealing with this concern, I'd create a caring environment, listen to them, and suggest healthy ways to cope.
