Emotional Abuse

Josh Stieber

Psychologist, PhD
Emotional abuse is often harder to identify than other forms of abuse. The impact, however, creates deep pain, confusion, and many other difficult consequences. Whether your emotional abuse was inflicted by parents, partners, authority figures, or anyone else, therapy can be immensely helpful for those wanting to address these consequences. It is important to have a therapist who understands the nuances of emotional abuse. Addressing trauma (of which abuse is a form of) is one of my major area of expertise. Should we work together, I will help you identify how your abuse impacted you and I will support you in bringing love and compassion to the painful parts of yourself.

Emotional abuse can be so painful. It locks us into negative self talk. EMDR, psychodynamic work and STAIR/NST are great approaches to address it. I help clients process through their painful experiences by offering them sensitivity and empathy. I help clients develop more effective ways of seeing themselves and their past.

New York City, New York therapist: Chrissie Chua- Ly van manh, counselor/therapist
Emotional Abuse

Chrissie Chua- Ly van manh

Counselor/Therapist, LMHC-D, LPC
I have 10 years of experience supporting clients who have experienced emotional abuse in a variety of contexts, including intimate relationships and family systems. Emotional abuse can be deeply damaging, often leaving individuals feeling confused, isolated, self-doubting, and disconnected from their own sense of reality and worth. It can be especially complex when it occurs within relationships that are ongoing or difficult to fully separate from. Much of my work in this area focuses on helping clients make sense of toxic or unhealthy relational dynamics and begin to name what has happened to them with greater clarity and self-trust. For many clients, this also includes exploring parental emotional abuse and the lasting impact it can have on identity, attachment, and self-esteem, particularly when cultural or family expectations may influence how relationships are maintained or understood. I approach this work with deep care and validation, with the intention of helping clients feel less alone and more grounded in their own experience. Together, we work toward rebuilding a sense of internal safety, strengthening self-trust, and moving out of the confusion and darkness that emotional abuse can create. Healing in this space often involves clarifying boundaries in relationships and exploring what connection or distance may feel healthiest and most supportive for the client. These decisions are deeply personal and can be complex, and I remain present with clients as they navigate them at their own pace. Ultimately, this work involves both understanding what has happened and actively rebuilding from within- developing healthier boundaries, reconnecting with one’s voice, and cultivating a stronger, more compassionate relationship with oneself.

Emotional Abuse

Psychologist, PhD
Under the guise of trauma focused therapy, the more subtle and therefore sometimes most confusing aspects of emotional abuse can become critical to unwind and understand both in the context of past childhood experiences with immature caregivers, how these experiences can inform the choice of romantic partners later in life and how to move past these patterns and expectations to allow for growth and freedom from relationships that detract rather than add.
