Social isolation can be the aftermath of multiple factors. Some peole struggle with being around others and in their attemt to avoid painful emotions and experiences, choose to keep contacts to a minimum. The reasons for interpersonal difficulties and the resulting avoidance of relationships can also be multifaceted, but in my experience almost aways link back to adveristies at various stages of a person's life (including their very early life).
Poverty, physical illness and disability and social exclusion are also often reasons for people to find themselves alone and isolated.

Human beings are eminently social animals. In order to survive we need oxygen, we need water and nutrition, and we need social interaction. Sometimes social isolation occurs as a result of circumstances and sometimes as a result of psychological difficulties such as social anxiety. Whatever the reasons for social isolation, it does not have to be endured; competent psychological counselling can help in reintegrating an individual with the world around him or her.
Many of my clients became very isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic. They had difficulty getting back to social activities after lockdowns. Before the pandemic, many of them had problems with depression and social anxiety. Some of them also experienced new fears and anxieties due to the pandemic and the challenges they faced as a family.
I offer DBT, which is a type of psychological treatment for people with social anxiety and depression.
