Amy L Gould
Licensed Professional Counselor, LPCC-S, NCC, CCMHC
When you are dealing with chronic pain or illness, it is helpful to have a neutral party with whom you can share your daily struggles. It is important to be able to live life and put your best face forward, and equally important to have professional help where you can share your thoughts and feelings about what you are going through.

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.
Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Typically, Chronic Pain Syndrome patients come to see a psychologist after being seen by a number of other health professionals to no avail, including internal medicine physicians, orthopedists, surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, emergency room doctors (for late-night injections of powerful pain killing drugs) and others. Typically, a Chronic Pain evaluation consists of several approaches to discovering which factors play the largest role in maintaining the pain. We ask patients to keep a Pain Diary for a week or two, which helps us pinpoint which activities or emotional states are related to an increase in pain level. This also helps us observe how they are actually taking their medications. We may also perform psychological testing to determine any underlying causes of depression or anxiety which should be treated in addition to the Chronic Pain and which could be helping to maintain it. At least one Family Session is held to explore whether there have been unconscious payoffs within the family for being in pain.

Living with chronic pain and illness, especially when invisible takes it toll on our humanity. Chronic conditions cause isolation, depression and suffering and lead to feelings of hopelessness. Akron's identity as the 'Rubber City' — once the world capital of tire manufacturing — has given way to a post-industrial economy navigating transformation, and therapists here frequently address the long-term psychological effects of deindustrialization: economic stress, community grief, and the identity challenges of a workforce that has had to reinvent itself across generations. The city is home to the University of Akron and has a growing health sciences and polymer science sector, creating a more economically diverse population than its industrial reputation suggests. Summa Health System and Cleveland Clinic Akron General provide institutional mental health resources alongside a private therapy community concentrated in West Akron, Fairlawn, and the Highland Square neighborhood. Akron's significant Black community and the city's ongoing recovery from decades of economic decline shape a therapy culture in which community resilience and racial equity are recurring clinical themes.
