Perfectionism can create constant pressure to get things right, fear of failure, harsh self-criticism, and difficulty feeling satisfied with your accomplishments. Therapy can help you recognize unhelpful perfectionistic patterns, develop more flexible expectations, and build a healthier relationship with achievement, mistakes, and yourself.

I have spent an extensive amount of time researching, writing and working with patients with perfectionism. I am aware and address the many challenges perfectionists face when entering therapy. In general, perfectionists may be prone to terminating therapy prematurely. For example, a self-oriented perfectionist may interpret seeking help as though they are flawed and end the relationships quickly. Socially oriented perfectionists may want to please their therapist and thus not reveal thoughts and feelings and feel dissatisfied with the therapy process. By discussing the therapy relationship and monitoring thoughts and feelings throughout the process premature termination can be avoided. Through the therapy relationship perfectionists may also develop and internalize new coping skills to manage expectations. For example, new relationship experiences that occur in the therapy relationship (ex: expressing needs or being vulnerable) may generalize to other social settings. Other oriented perfectionists who can learn to accept the imperfections of their therapist can learn to possibly be more tolerant of others.
I also work with perfectionist patients on learning to manage anxiety regarding expectations and teach self-acceptance and compassion skills using mindfulness and Buddhist influenced interventions. I also help perfectionists identify and manage maladaptive cognitions and patterns that lead to distress. I help perfectionists develop more balanced thinking. I help teach self-oriented perfectionists how to set boundaries and say “no” to others. Many perfectionists, particularly self-oriented perfectionists are reluctant to let go of expectations fearing this will impair performance. Managing perfectionism however, does not necessarily mean desiring less, but changing one’s relationship and response to when expectations are not met.

Brittany Ryan-Berzins
Psychologist, PhD
Perfectionism can look like ambition, discipline, and high standards, yet beneath the surface it can be accompanied by self-doubt, anxiety, and the persistent feeling that you are never quite doing enough. My approach is grounded in compassion, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral therapy, helping clients understand the beliefs and patterns that keep perfectionism in place while developing a kinder and more balanced relationship with themselves. Together, we explore the fear of mistakes, the need for control, and the tendency to measure self-worth through achievement or external validation. Rather than asking you to give up your aspirations, we work toward pursuing what matters with greater flexibility and freedom. Through increased self-awareness, self-compassion, and practical behavioral change, clients can learn to tolerate imperfection, quiet the inner critic, and experience a sense of accomplishment without constantly moving the goalposts. The goal is not to become less driven, but to be able to strive, grow, and succeed without sacrificing your well-being in the process.

Full Circle Mental Health LLC
Registered Social Worker, MSW, LISW
Perfectionism is rarely about a simple desire to do well; it is a relentless, exhausting armor used to protect ourselves from shame, judgment, and the fear of never being "enough." When you are trapped in this cycle, every mistake feels catastrophic, procrastination takes over out of fear of failure, and chronic burnout bleeds into your career, relationships, and health. At Full Circle Mental Health LLC, I provide a compassionate, virtual space across Ohio to help you put down the heavy burden of impossible standards.
I view perfectionism through an integrative, trauma-informed lens, understanding that it often develops as a survival mechanism to find safety, control, or validation in early life or rigid environments. Grounded in a strengths-based framework, I help you unravel these patterns from the comfort of your own home.
You do not have to earn your right to rest or peace. Whether your perfectionism manifests as corporate burnout, relationship anxiety, or the rigid expectations left over from a strict religious upbringing, we will work as collaborative partners. Together, we will honor your innate resilience, build practical tools, and co-create a personalized virtual roadmap to help you embrace your authentic self and live a life of meaningful, flexible peace.
