Jeffrey Driscoll

Pre-Licensed Professional, Counsellor, Master of Psychology Graduate Student , yoga life coach, Ontario certified teacher
After volunteering with a crisis center I developed a passion for helping people find new hope while accepting life as it is. This requires us to acknowledge how suicidal thoughts are a normal part of the human experience, and how to move be ourselves forward finding our own personal power in the midst of severe odds. We move beyond safety planning to an exploration of how to move towards well being.

Suicidal Thoughts

Joshua Lewis

Registered Psychotherapist, RP, CT
Psychotherapy can often be beneficial for people who are experiencing chronic suicidal ideation and behavior. However, when individuals are at risk of suicide it is essential that they receive a higher level of care and weekly psychotherapy is not always sufficient on its own to protect those who are in crisis and adequately address risk. Once an individual is no longer in crisis, therapy to treat the underlying causes of suicidal ideation or behavior is typically recommended. The psychotherapy model considers hopelessness to be the strongest contributing factor to suicidal ideation, and a large part of crisis intervention and post crisis counseling aims to restore hope. An individual who continues in therapy once the point of crisis has passed will likely explore ways to resist urges to self-harm, address the factors that led to suicidal thoughts, and create a plan that includes coping strategies and methods to address suicidal thoughts in the event that they recur.

It can be overwhelming when you're feeling suicidal. You might feel like you have no other option than to act on these feelings. That there’s nothing that will make the thoughts or feelings go away. Or that it’s the only way the pain will stop. Your feelings of pain are very real. But it’s important to know they can pass.

When life feels so challenging and hope is lost, suicidal thoughts and/or desires to self-harm may arise. I am here to support you in creating a safety plan, developing additional coping mechanisms, providing tools for assessing risk and building upon your resources. While your safety is always my first priority, I also welcome open, honest and non-judgemental conversations about suicidal ideation and self-harm that go beyond surface level safety concerns. I acknowledge the social stigma that exists around topics of suicide and self-harm, which is why I strive to provide a safe space that you may not have otherwise.
