Anger turned inward, often results in depression. Yes there are bio chemical causes for depression, but in my 25 year plus experience, depression is almost never simply a brain chemistry issue. And as a holistic psychotherapist, I find that people who have mild to medium depression can often overcome it with a combination of talk therapy, unpacking family of origin messaging, unpacking low self value as well as inner exploring of believes.. All this, in addition to bringing in natural amino acid supplementation. This combination has been immensely effective in neutralizing the beast that depression can be. Note: If a client has suicidal ideation, a person does need to have a medical person on their team to navigate possible allopathic medication to create the very important brain balance they need to be able to unpack some difficult therapeutic content.

FREE consultations! When we are feeling depressed it can feel as nothing will help, not even therapy. Depression can take the joy and colour out of life and paint a vision of a future for us where nothing seems to matter and no hope seems to be coming. Our minds can focus on the problems that we are experiencing in the present moment and tell us that these problems are fixed, unchangeable, and overwhelming. No amount of 'trying harder' seems to work; neither does the suggestion others might give us to 'snap out of it.' If only it were so easy. While depression can feel unmoveable; psychotherapy is an evidence-based way to tackle feelings of depression. This is true regardless of whether you are experiencing passing negative mood states that you want to improve or going through a full-blown depression episode. Psychotherapy helps. Approaches such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can give us new ways to approach the exhaustion, tiredness, and hopelessness that often come along with depression. It's not about trying harder; it's about working differently, learning new ways to work with the thoughts, feelings, and automatic behaviours that come along with depression that set up a vicious cycle bringing us in further negative mood states. If you are struggling with depression, I can help. I will provide you with a non-judgmental, understanding, and caring space to explore what's going on for you. We'll also set goals for our work together and using evidence-based approaches and strategies start to move towards a future where depression continues to fade into the background and your life, dreams, goals, and future seem real and hopeful again. I offer a free no obligation phone consultation and would be happy to work with you.

Seeking treatment for depression can be an intimidating endeavor. Frequently, the depression itself becomes a barrier. A person grappling with depression may experience feelings of being overwhelmed, exhaustion, and hopelessness. They may also unfairly place blame on themselves or their circumstances for their emotional state. These symptoms and thoughts are common companions to depression, making it challenging for individuals suffering from depression to vocalize their struggles, seek assistance or trust that treatment can provide relief. I use evidence based treatment approaches such as CBT, behavior therapy and interpersonal therapy. During episodes of depression, negative thought patterns, such as self-doubt and guilt, frequently exacerbate the problem. Cognitive behavioral therapy endeavours to gradually dismantle these patterns, allowing individuals to cultivate improved self-perception and experience an overall sense of improvement.

An important thing to remember when facing depression is that it is moveable, changeable. Depression, in my experience, can change with processing what has happened in your life and understanding your response to the impact it has had on your life. It often involves processing that which takes place between the trigger and then the natural response to avoid/get rid of or push away the pain. With a little help the awareness of feeling state can be understood; often it has to do with our relationships and learning how to stick up for ourselves and repair. This is where Mindfulness and Meditation comes in and also self-compassion. For more on self compassion; see Chris Germer and also Kristen Neff.
