Barbara Freedman
Pre-Licensed Professional, M.Ed., OAMHP(Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals-2704-G)
My role in helping clients deal with the narcissist in their life arises from my trauma informed work with victims, as many of them have or continue to experience on-going abuse from someone with this disorder. Those with a narcissistic personality disorder are unwilling to admit anything is wrong in regard to how they behave, making them extremely difficult to deal with. Abusive narcissistic parents see their children merely as an extension of themselves. Although this behavior cannot be altered, safety issues can be addressed, and clients can be taught more functional means of dealing with the narcissist to avoid allowing them to interfere with their happiness.

Living with or loving someone with narcissistic traits can be confusing and exhausting. Therapy helps individuals with NPD better understand their emotions, empathy and relationships, while also supporting those affected by narcissistic behaviours to set boundaries and heal. Change is possible, but it begins with self-awareness and compassion.
