Regardless of whether you call it domestic abuse, domestic violence, or interpersonal violence, this form of trauma and abuse can occur in the context of romantic or family relationships and can include physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. The effects of this form of abuse can have seriously implications on a survivor's mental and physical health. Common effects are depression, anxiety, addiction, PTSD and Complex PTSD as well as injury, chronic pain, and disability. If left untreated, these difficulties will not resolve and often survivors will notice that they continue to experience patterns of abuse in future relationships.
If you're going through it right now, or have been battling the symptoms for a while, you might feel hopeless and alone. You might not believe that it is possible to get help and for things to improve. Domestic abuse does not have to be a life sentence - at New Moon Psychotherapy we work extensively with survivors of domestic violence and are trained in evidence based therapies to help you recover. These therapies include: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for PTSD (DBT-PTSD), Sensimotor Psychotherapy, Somatic Psychotherapy.
We will work with you at any stage that you're at and whatever situation you're in - if you are still in the abusive situation and do not want to leave or are contemplating leaving, if you have recently left or have been away from the abuse for a while. We promise not to judge, to work with you at your pace, and to tailor your treatment plan to your needs.
