In therapy, you will be provided with skills and strategies to manage depression symptoms. Self-care, self-love and acceptance, and mindfullness-based practice are provided through educational and therapeutic modalities such as goal setting, dialectical behaviour therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy.
I was trained in IPT at the Centre of Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, at the Department of Psychiatry University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and in Group IPT at McMaster University Department of Psychiatry School of Medicine. I trained and supervised Psychology Interns, Psychiatry Residents and Social Work Students in Interpersonal Psychotherapy. IPT is a method of treating depression and is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on you and your relationships with other people. It's based on the idea that personal relationships are at the center of psychological problems.
Depression often follows changes in one’s interpersonal environment (e.g., struggle with a significant other, loss of a loved one, life transitions such as divorce, job loss, postpartum or inability to maintain or develop social connections). Once depressed, symptoms can lead to compromised interpersonal functioning, which can precipitate continued stressful events. The goal in therapy is to address both the stressful life events and improved social support.
IPT focuses on improving problematic interpersonal relationships or circumstances that are directly related to the current depressive episode.
Depression can have many causes, much of it situational and due to unhelpful thinking patterns. I use behavioural activation and cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) techniques to help you improve your day to day functioning and find more joy and fulfillment in life.

Psychotherapy can be like a light shining onto the dark night of depression. Specific situations may cause us to feel sad and lethargic. Sometimes our feelings are ’stuck’ and need to be expressed. Depression can also be organic in nature and may need to be supported by medical interventions such as anti-depressants. Both of these treatments can be effective in the healing process of depression.
