I have pursued further education about Smart Recovery and have taken courses in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and addiction pharmacology to better support SUD /AUD and addiction. I also understand and support interested clients through their use of twelve step programs. The various challenges around food, eating and weight are other areas that I have extra training to support clients with. Through psychotherapy, I support the emotional, cognitive and behavioural aspects of food and weight-related struggles.

Recently, I was contacted by a woman who said she wanted to deal with her binge drinking. When I asked her how often she binged, she said "pretty much every night". After further discussion, she said she would love to quit drinking altogether so we set that intention, though she thought it would be difficult. After one session, which occurred right before holiday season, she wrote back saying she had made it through Christmas and New Years without a drink and, in addition, had been able to make better decisions around a broader range of issues, because of the tools I had given her. In addition, I have worked with binge eating, smoking addiction, etc.

Comox Valley, British Columbia therapist: Julie Taylor Counselling, counselor/therapist
Substance Abuse

Julie Taylor Counselling

Counsellor/Therapist, MTC, RCS
Addiction is driven by the psyche which is trying to salve a troublesome problem that we may not even be aware of and is trying to help us to survive. Addiction hijacks our self and we need to get back in control of our own lives and destinies. An addiction is often more compelling than anything else including family, earning a living and can wreck our life.. Some substances also cause a physical addiction that can be managed and reduced with medical help. Once we determine and understand why this addiction exists, we can start to process it and loosen its grip on us.

I help clients understand the emotional, relational, historical, and nervous-system patterns that fuel addictive cycles. Instead of focusing only on behavior change, we explore what the mind and body are trying to cope with beneath the surface. My approach supports deeper regulation, clarity, and long-term stability and curiosity rather than judgment, so you can build a healthier relationship with yourself and your choices

Saskatoon is Saskatchewan's largest city and an emerging hub for agriculture technology, mining, and biotechnology — sectors that shape a therapy landscape distinct from more diversified Canadian metros. The city has a significant Indigenous population, with First Nations and Métis residents comprising a larger proportion of urban residents than in most Canadian cities outside Winnipeg, and therapists offering trauma-informed, culturally grounded care — including work on intergenerational trauma from residential schools — are an especially important part of the local mental health landscape. Saskatchewan Health Authority provides public mental health services, while the University of Saskatchewan's psychology programs supply clinical training to the local community. Saskatoon's cold winters and geographic isolation contribute to seasonal mood challenges that therapists here address as a recurring clinical priority.
