Eating Disorders

Emma Poxon

Counsellor/Therapist, MA Person-Centred Experiential Counselling
Eating disorders can feel completely overwhelming, like there's no way out. As your therapist I am here to be with you, reminding you that you are not alone. We can explore how your eating disorder feels for you, when it is at its worst, and help you to gain more of a sense of control over this. You are not a problem to be fixed, my aim as your therapist is to try to provide the right conditions to allow you to explore whatever you want to bring to therapy to support your growth. This isn't a therapeutic approach wherein I will set a treatment plan or tell you what to do. We will work together as a partnership rather than me taking away your autonomy. I absolutely love the work I do, it is the biggest privilege being let into people’s personal worlds and seeing the immense growth of my clients. I hope to hear from you soon!

I help people understand food from the oral and anal stage of sychological development. We learn about behaviour around eating and ways to respect and enjoy food in healthier way. Often it's not food that's a problem but a side effect.

Eating disorders are quite deep and are one of the hardest issues to work with in psychological terms. so many problems may cause the symptoms but with many years of experience we have many tools in the bag to help. It can be simply a cry for help or a way the mind used to develop a coping mechanism against controlling parent(s) or to arm oneself from systematic abuse or fears. So many causes but many solutions on the table for us to use.

Many eating disorders co-occur with trauma, depression and enmeshment with abusive systems or individuals, so we offer support for recovering from these complex experiences as part of addiction recovery. Addiction and restriction recovery includes deeply compassionate work with IFS, Polyvagal and Addiction Circles mapping to develop awareness and work through both original trauma based adaptations and compounded adaptive behavior. Utilizing this novel approach, recovery can be a path to deeper self care, compassion and meaning and can reveal more ease and connection with others. From a functional health perspective, common dietary trends, challenging factory farming practices, and environmental toxins can also play a role in setting on and deepening and ED or disordered eating. So sometimes addressing a nutritional deficiency or chemical toxin may be important to do in a way that is sensitive to the psychology of living with an ED. Over time many clients may move into a next phase of becoming more broad in their dietary choices and/or lovingly becoming friends with their body, goals can vary. If the ED is a compulsion, we can also apply remote TCM, CranioSacral and Functional or Integrative support if asked for. Please feel free to ask if you have questions.

Eating Disorders

Jonathan Livingstone Therapy & Coaching

Psychologist, MSc, MA, PGCE, GMBPsS
Anorexia or bulimia, or milder versions of these, are often a way to assert power for people who feel they are powerless. If you have no power in any other arena, at least you have some power over your own body. The behaviours can continue even long after the situation that underlies them is no longer present. I will help you to identify the experiences that underlie the problem and heal them, so that you can behave in a way consistent with your health and happiness.
