Perfectionism

Ryan Shannon

Counselor/Therapist, LMHCA, MA, MS
Perfectionism can look like ambition from the outside, but internally it may feel like constant pressure. You may procrastinate because you are afraid of getting something wrong, overwork yourself trying to meet impossible standards, struggle to accept praise, or feel that your worth depends on how well you perform. My approach is both insight-oriented and practical. Drawing from Adlerian and psychodynamic therapy, we may explore how criticism, family expectations, comparison, achievement, or past experiences shaped the belief that you must be exceptional to feel secure, respected, or worthy. We can also examine what perfectionism protects you from, such as rejection, shame, uncertainty, or the fear of disappointing others. I use CBT to help you identify all-or-nothing thinking, unrealistic expectations, and harsh self-judgments. We may practice replacing rigid standards with goals that are challenging but sustainable. Mindfulness can also help you notice self-critical thoughts without automatically obeying them. When appropriate, I may suggest behavioral missions that involve doing something imperfectly, submitting work without excessive checking, resting before everything is finished, asking for help, or allowing someone to see you while you are still learning. These challenges are paced carefully and designed to help you discover that mistakes and uncertainty are uncomfortable, but survivable. My goal is not to take away your motivation or lower your standards. It is to help you pursue meaningful goals without sacrificing your health, relationships, or sense of self in the process.

Licensed Professional Counselor, EdD, LPC
I help clients break free from the pressure of perfectionism and the belief that their worth is tied to achievement or getting everything "right." Together, we explore the underlying fears, self-criticism, and unrealistic expectations that fuel perfectionism while developing greater self-compassion, flexibility, and confidence. My goal is to help clients embrace progress over perfection so they can live with greater authenticity, balance, and peace.

If you hold yourself to very high standards yet rarely feel satisfied with your efforts, perfectionism may be driving constant pressure beneath the surface. While striving for excellence can be a strength, perfectionism often brings self-criticism, worry about mistakes, and difficulty slowing down.
