Psychologist, MC, R.Psych.
 therapist: Kate Hollowell Sheldon,

I have ten years of experience working with a wide variety of people and I have worked with a variety of mental health concerns in community and clinical settings. I am a trained forensic and clinical psychologist and I have a passion for working with trauma, grief, and sexual or narcissistic abuse recovery. My approach to counselling is accessible and laidback. I do not work from a manual which can come across as inauthentic and stuffy. I enjoy walking alongside my clients when they are struggling and sharing a laugh and celebrating their victories. I take the time to get to know the person(s) sitting in my office to understand what therapeutic approach may work best and work with that person to help them implement and maintain meaningful change.

Treatment Approach

  • Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) A trauma-focused therapy that uses eye movements and imagery to help the brain reframe distressing memories. It often leads to quicker relief from symptoms compared to traditional talk therapy.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
  • Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) A structured therapy that uses guided eye movements to help process traumatic memories. It is widely recognized for treating PTSD and trauma-related conditions.
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) A short-term approach focused on improving relationships and social support. It is often used for depression and grief.
  • Multicultural Therapy Acknowledges the role of culture, race, and identity in mental health. It values diversity and adapts treatment to each person’s background.
  • Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
  • Somatic Therapy Helps clients notice how emotions are stored in the body. It uses breath, movement, and awareness for healing trauma and stress.
Approach Description: I use an integrative, holistic approach of which I can combine several therapeutic approaches to create a treatment plan that makes sense for you. I am flexible and collaborative. I can be directive at times, when it is deemed helpful but I like to work in collaboration with the client since this is their session - not mine! I am happy to provide direction and suggestions, I have strategies and experiments to offer a client if needed.

Kate Hollowell Sheldon Practice Description
My practice consists of working with individual adults and couples. I work from an integrative and holistic approach of which we address the thoughts/beliefs, emotions, behaviours, and the nervous system when we tackle a concern in session. I have been trained in several, evidence-based modalities that can be integrated and combined to avoid experiencing a limited, one-size-fits-all approach. I have extensive training in trauma recovery. In this area of work, I have had the privilege of working with members of our community who have experienced trauma including traumatic loss, Indigenous men who are federally incarcerated, I have worked with veterans and active military members, as well as first responders. In the area of trauma, I have a specialized training and interest in helping men and women recover from childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault, and narcissistic abuse recovery. I also specialize in grief recovery work, which can be linked with trauma or difficulties moving through the waves of grief that occur after a loss. Sometimes grief can bring about meaningful change in someone's life. Grief work can expand to experiencing other types of losses other than a death of a loved one. Grief can include loss of identity, loss of direction in life, difficulties with work or relationships. Finally, in addition with working with the bread and butter of psychology - anxiety and depression, I work with people who are experiencing burnout and/or compassion fatigue. I have worked with medical professionals, members of the legal and correctional services field, as well as people who have resilience fatigue and are generally burned out in their life or in their relationships.
