Most of us have not been taught how to lose. We are often focused on gathering and gaining things, money, achievements. However, life offers us times of loss. When loss occurs, whether it be the loss of a loved one, loss, loss of one with whom you wished you could have loved, loss of job, marriage, or even moving, it can take us off center. Experiencing a loss can leave us depressed, anxious, confused, the development of unanswered questions, and more. At a time when we are trying to gather and gain, we are knocked down and feel defeated.
I offer a space to examine what is happening and to suggest alternate ways of coping. Whether in-person or virtually, I seek to help my clients gain clarity on how to best manage their challenges. Using effective listening, I help my clients identify a goal and then through specific questioning and discussion, help them to achieve their goals for better management of their losses and related feelings. I use a combination of therapeutic techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Family Systems.
Most of my clients are middle-aged and from diverse backgrounds. I incorporate spirituality, culture, family background and other aspects of your life into my understanding of who you are. This helps you to view your unique situation in a more comprehensive and holistic context than only viewing the problem alone. I am also sensitive to issues of age and its impact on your level of hopefulness in making peace with the implications of the issue at hand.
My experience includes working with those considered “older adults” and moving toward retirement or other major life transitions. At this state of life, you may have different goals and challenges different from when you were maybe in the workforce or had younger children.
If you are ready to find joy and hope again even after challenging losses or transitions, contact me by sending me a message. You will have started your journey toward healing and you won’t be doing it alone!
