Phoenix, Arizona therapist: Brent Peak, counselor/therapist
Anxiety

Brent Peak

Counselor/Therapist, LPC
Anxiety can feel like you’re constantly bracing for impact, even when nothing is wrong. You overthink conversations, anticipate rejection, and struggle to relax, as if the weight of responsibility and others' expectations never stops pressing down. Maybe your mind races at night, replaying mistakes or worrying about things beyond your control. You’ve learned to stay on high alert—not because you want to, but because your nervous system never learned how to feel safe. If you grew up in an environment where love felt conditional, emotions were dismissed, or conflict meant danger, it makes sense that your brain adapted to expect the worst. But you don’t have to live this way forever. Anxiety isn’t just in your mind—it’s in your body, shaped by old survival patterns that no longer serve you. Using Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Post-Induction Therapy (PIT), I help clients reprocess past wounds so their nervous system can finally relax. Instead of just managing symptoms, we teach your brain and body that you are safe now—so you can stop living in survival mode, set boundaries without guilt, and trust yourself again. Therapy isn’t about forcing yourself to “calm down”—it’s about healing the root cause so peace becomes your new normal.

John P Rogers

Marriage and Family Therapist, AAMFT Approved Supervisor
I work with highly motivated individuals, couples, and families who are ready to do something different about the anxiety that has been running their lives. If you’re tired of the constant worry, racing thoughts, or feeling on edge, now may be the time to step off the anxiety merry-go-round and move toward steadiness and clarity. I can help you. With your goals for therapy in mind, we will work together using interventions uniquely tailored to your experience of anxiety—whether that shows up as overthinking, avoidance, tension in relationships, or difficulty relaxing. Jayson L. Mystkowski

Psychologist, Ph.D., ABPP
While Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) is highly effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders (e.g., Panic Disorder, Social Phobia, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), clinicians do see some “return of fear,” or partial relapse, in some patients due to a variety of factors. Over the past two decades, treatment researchers, with whom Dr. Jayson Mystkowski had the pleasure of working with at UCLA for over 10 years, have studied “return of fear” and discovered some key variables that may optimize the effects of learning during CBT for anxiety disorders (Craske et al., 2008). First, evidence suggests that focusing on tolerating fear versus eliminating fear yields better clinical outcomes in the long term. Namely, teaching clients that fear and anxiety are normal feelings, rather than attempting to “down-regulate” such feelings all the time, is more realistic and seems to engender “hardier” clients. Second, helping clients to generate an expectancy that “scary things will not happen,” is very powerful. To do this, it is important for clinicians to create more complex exposure exercises (i.e., tasks in which a client confronts a stimulus of which they are afraid), using multiple feared stimuli instead of one at a time. Then, the lack of a feared outcome becomes particularly surprising and memorable for a client and fear reduction is more potent. Third, increasing the accessibility and retrievability of non-fear memories learned during treatment are powerful factors in mitigating against a return of fear. Craske and colleagues demonstrated that exposure to variations of a feared stimulus, using a random schedule across multiple contexts or situations, is more effective than exposure to the same stimulus, on a predictable schedule, in an unchanging environment. The former paradigm, it is argued, creates stronger non-fear memories that are easier for a client to access when subsequently confronting feared objects or situations outside of the therapy context, than the later scenario. In sum, clinicians have long been aware that some fear or anxiety returns following very successful CBT treatment. As mentioned above, there are some clear, empirically supported ways to modify the therapy we provide to further help clients generalize the gains made in therapy sessions to the real world.

Jasmine Wilson

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW, SEP-IT
You're exhausted but your mind never seems to settle, making it difficult for you to actually be present to the things that matter in life. Racing thoughts and worry, feelings of restlessness, and a deep sense of something feeling "off" make it difficult for you to get quality sleep, and although you've gotten used to functioning this way, you recognize it's not sustainable. Feeling at ease and more settled in your body is possible. By engaging the body and nervous system in our work, we can shift the mental, physical, emotional, and behavioral patterns driving anxiety—getting to the root of your worries and fears, so you can finally feel calm, steady, and present again.

Our minds are programmed to constantly be scanning our environment for signs of threat in order to keep us safe. Couples therapy can be a powerful space for easing anxiety—especially when worry, overthinking, conflict avoidance, or emotional disconnection begin affecting the relationship. Using evidence-based Gottman Method, therapy guides couples to understand their patterns that fuel stress and insecurity while building healthier communication, emotional safety, and trust. Partners learn practical tools to reduce reactivity, navigate difficult conversations with greater calm, and strengthen connection during times of uncertainty. As couples feel more supported and understood by one another, anxiety often becomes more manageable both within the relationship and individually. Feelings of anxiety and fears are welcomed into the therapy space to create understanding and build a path to healing.

Anxiety often comes from attempts to control. A piece of our work is to increase acceptance of ambiguity and uncertainty and live in spaces of gray. Anxiety also can pull us into avoidance so we will work to approach and move toward the anxious or fearful thing.
