Experiencing domestic abuse—whether emotional, psychological, physical, financial, or coercive—can deeply impact your sense of safety, identity, and trust. I provide a trauma-informed, attachment-based space where your story is honored and your pace is respected. Using Internal Family Systems (IFS), we gently work with parts of you that may feel afraid, self-critical, numb, or conflicted. Through a developmental and Emotionally Focused lens, we explore how attachment wounds and relational patterns may have shaped the relationship dynamic—without blame or judgment. Los Angeles, California therapist: Laura Anderson LPCC, Eff Shame Therapy, licensed professional counselor
Domestic Abuse

Laura Anderson LPCC, Eff Shame Therapy

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPCC
Domestic violence leaves marks that don't always show — in the way you flinch, the way you apologize, the way you've learned to make yourself small, the way you've forgotten what it felt like to feel safe. What happened to you was not your fault, and the ways you survived it made sense at the time. Healing from abuse means more than leaving — it means untangling what it did to your sense of self, your relationships, your body, and your trust in the world. I work from a trauma-informed, shame-free perspective using EMDR, Flash Technique, and evidence-based approaches to help you understand what happened, grieve it, and find your way back to yourself. You survived it. Now let's get you back.

West Hollywood, California therapist: Dr. Ingrid Solano, psychologist
Domestic Abuse

Dr. Ingrid Solano

Psychologist, PhD
Making sense of trauma, and the impact of trauma, can be accompanied by the fear that you will never be able to overcome the distress you feel when you remember the experience or when those intrusive nightmares, flashbacks, and negative thoughts come crashing into your awareness. Through trauma-focused therapy we reclaim confidence, hopefulness, intimacy, safety, self-esteem, and trust. I have specific expertise in treating trauma symptoms related to sexual assault, intimate partner violence and emotional abuse, military sexual trauma (MST), childhood and complex sexual trauma, violence, and combat trauma experienced by Veterans. These experiences can impact physical health, and daily life. Many people will experience a form of trauma in their lives. Trauma can come with feelings of shame, anger, and confusion. Posttraumatic stress is a normal human reaction to traumatic events. However, for some individuals this stress persists and interferes with their ability to live the life that they want. I work with complex cases that sometimes include dissociation, numbness, anger, risky behaviors, and years of avoidance. The treatments I provide are the most powerful and effective treatments available for these conditions. I have expertise in individual, as well as relationship (i.e., with a partner) based trauma-focused therapies. I have experienced many times how these treatments help people gain new perspectives about what happened to them, develop a sense of empowerment over their trauma, and improve their lives. These treatments can also be helpful if you feel stuck following experiences of trauma, even if you don’t have PTSD. If you’re unsure whether you want to discuss your trauma, or unsure which approach feels like a good fit for you, we can discuss your concerns. We will explore trauma-focused care that builds upon your current support, coping skills, and personal experience. I primarily employ time-limited, evidence-based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT) such as CPT, PE, and CBCT. (See Individual and Couples Therapy based Trauma-Focused Services.) In psychological literature, stressors are defined as events and conditions (e.g., losing a job, death of an intimate partner) that cause change and require that the individual adapt to the new situation or life circumstance. Stress processes can include the experience of prejudice events, expectations of rejection, hiding and concealing your authentic self, internalized homophobia, intimate partner violence, discrimination, and ameliorative coping processes that have become bad, ineffective habits. These experiences can be particularly painful when there is social pressure to conceal your experiences, or stigma. I address what it’s like to have no one to talk to about these experiences, and any distress that comes from having nowhere to do this work safely. I practice LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy that considers the impact of minority stress and chronic stress responses. Aside from these stress processes, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and heterosexuals who report any same-sex sexual partners over their lifetime, have greater risk of childhood maltreatment, interpersonal violence, trauma to a close friend or relative, and unexpected death of someone close.

Virginia Beach, Virginia therapist: MindOverHealing Therapies, hypnotherapist
Domestic Abuse

MindOverHealing Therapies

Hypnotherapist, CHt
Domestic abuse involves a pattern of controlling and coercive behaviors in intimate relationships. It can be physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, or financial. The trauma from such experiences can lead to a range of mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Hypnotherapy allows individuals to access and process traumatic memories in a safe and controlled environment. By guiding clients into a relaxed state, hypnotherapists help them confront and release the emotional pain associated with their experiences.

If you've experienced domestic abuse or violence, you may find yourself constantly second-guessing yourself, struggling to trust your instincts, feeling anxious in relationships, walking on eggshells, or questioning your own worth. In situations where someone is recovering from DV, there may need to be toggling between assessing first things first proactive steps to get out of or mitigate a dangerous situation. From there, the approach may be building practice with polyvagal and other stabilizing nervous system support. Then when there is more spaciousness deeper trauma work may be helpful. We've weaved with clients between these different needs organically, as the process is not always linear. We also support folks seeking ***safe*** peer group support as a helpful adjunct once they and their dependents, if any, are out of immediate danger.

There are many people who support the victims of Domestic Violence and Abuse. I am most interested in working with perpetrators. In my office, you'll find a place where you'll be listened to with respect. I've found that most who engage in violence and/or abuse were victims first. Let's collaborate to learn why you treat the ones you love the way you do, and then work out some other ways to create lasting positive relationships.

I can guide in the right direction for both counseling and resources needs.
