Dr. Amy Hecht

Psychologist, PhD
I work with couples at all stages of their relationships, from those looking to deepen connection to those navigating significant strain or considering major decisions about the future. Relationships can be both deeply fulfilling and profoundly challenging, and many couples find themselves stuck in patterns of miscommunication, disconnection, or recurring conflict. My approach is active, direct, and grounded in helping both partners better understand not only each other, but their own contributions to the dynamic. I focus on identifying patterns, improving communication, and fostering greater emotional awareness and accountability within the relationship. I also draw from structured approaches, including discernment counseling when one partner feels uncertain about whether to stay or leave, creating space for thoughtful, intentional decision-making. The goal is not simply to reduce conflict, but to help couples build more meaningful, resilient, and satisfying ways of relating—whether that leads to strengthening the relationship or gaining clarity about next steps.

When a relationship is struggling, it can feel like you and your partner are trapped in the exact same argument over and over again, leaving both of you feeling lonely, frustrated, and misunderstood. I specialize in helping couples break out of these destructive communication ruts and rediscover a sense of warmth, safety, and mutual respect. Utilizing the evidence-based Gottman Method Couples Therapy, I provide concrete, practical tools to help you manage conflict constructively, rebuild emotional intimacy, and deepen your friendship. Additionally, my background in trauma and Internal Family Systems (IFS) allows us to compassionately look at how individual past wounds might be showing up in your marriage today. I specialize in couples and relationship counseling and have worked with couples of all walks of life. We all know that relationships take some hard work sometimes to make sure we have a happy fullfilling relationship. Sometimes partners can resolve difficulties that arise on their own. But, sometimes, partners can get stuck in certain issues when regular resolution strategies they tend to use just are not working. Also, our lives are often in an ever changing state where new or different needs may come up for one or both partners. I work with couples, polycules, and all different structures of relationship and work from an integrative lens as every couple is unique and we may need to adjust the approach to help. I do however work a lot from Gottman therapy and also emotion focused therapy with my couples. Just a few more things... I'm poly-competent, trauma informed, kink affirming, and welcome all types of relationships.

My goal when working with couples is to validate each partner's experience, while identifying aspects of the couple's interactions with each other that contribute to conflict and relationship dissatisfaction. It can be hard to manage feelings that come up towards your partner, and you may find yourself feeling alone and unable to talk to others about your concerns. You may notice that you are attracted to similar types of partners, or that you have similar feelings/behaviors in relationships. Using an insight-oriented ("psychodynamic") and relational approach to therapy, I provide a warm and nonjudgmental space to explore your thoughts/feelings/experiences, and to help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships so that you can embrace a more fulfilling life. Please note that I only meet one-on-one with individuals to talk about their relationship issues, and don't do couples therapy.

Are you feeling overwhelmed and emotional on the inside? You work hard to create the life you want, but you feel like it might fall apart at any moment. Do others view you as the strong friend or family member who saves the day, but there is rarely anyone who consistently shows up for you? You wonder if you’re a people pleaser, too hard on yourself, and why others don’t respect your boundaries. Is there past trauma that could be affecting your current relationships that you need to process? Unmanaged anxiety, depression, or unhealed trauma can leave you feeling dissatisfied with life.

Having worked with hundreds of couples over the last 40 years, I have developed a set of beliefs or ideas which, if adopted, help to ensure that a relationship will last. One of the most important is: Arguing helps nothing, so don't do it. I like to say that I never met the person who started the fight! When two people argue, each of them believes that he or she is merely reacting to something the other one did or said. Neither one believes that they started the fight; but it started somehow, didn't it? It is better to be close than it is to be “right.” Blaming each other for the argument is counterproductive. So is trying to change the other person's opinion. Most couples who argue, argue about whose perception is "correct," whose way of doing something is the "right" way, and so on. The only possible outcome of these arguments is that someone will be "right" and someone will be "wrong." Do you know anyone who enjoys being wrong? Most people will fight tooth and nail to avoid being "wrong." Commitment is the Foundation of the Therapy Commitment implies that you are in the relationship "come Hell or high water," barring certain behaviors your partner might do such as having an affair (although I have seen a number of relationships recover from those, too). Unless each partner believes that the other one is committed, they will not feel safe to take risks in facing, addressing and working out the real, underlying issues that affect the relationship.

Every relationship has its unique dynamics, and sometimes patterns emerge that lead to disconnection, misunderstanding, or recurring conflict. In marital and relationship therapy, I provide a safe and structured environment for partners to explore these dynamics. We will collaboratively uncover the underlying needs and perspectives of each individual, fostering greater compassion and effective communication. The aim is to move beyond reactivity, build stronger bridges of understanding, and empower you to co-create a relationship built on mutual respect, trust, and shared growth.
