Dr. Michael M. Grant
Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Psychologist PhD, MBA
People are often afraid of anger and try hard to suppress it. Doing so only causes them to "blow" in angry outbursts and, by not addressing it and learning how to manage it, they just continue to suppress > increase the pressure > blow up in anger > spend time and effort trying to undo the hurt caused others by the blowup. There is a better way! Anger is a normal and natural emotion and we need it. But we also need to learn how to manage it and I can help you with that. Stop fearing your anger and start harnessing it for good and managing it so you don't do harm to yourself and others.

Dr. JD Wright
Psychologist, PhD, Licensed Psychologist
In my practice, I offer a focused approach to anger management, designed to help individuals understand and navigate their emotions effectively. Recognizing that anger often masks underlying feelings and motivations, I work collaboratively with clients to uncover these deeper layers. Our journey together includes learning to identify and challenge unhelpful assumptions, which can be pivotal in reshaping responses to stressful situations. Additionally, I emphasize the development of practical skills for managing stress in the moment, aiding in the cultivation of a more balanced and controlled emotional life. This process is grounded in respect and understanding, providing a safe space for individuals to explore and grow.

I understand anger, the effect it has on one’s life, and how it affects the people around you. When clients see me as a peaceful guy, they’re seeing the result of a lot of healing work (with more to do).
I’ve had considerable success helping clients with anger problems, perhaps because I believe anger management is secondary to healing. I believe most people who are angry are like volcanos. Even though the anger that shows on the surface in the present is hot enough to burn the client and everyone around him or her, there’s even more heat and energy “under ground” – in the past.
So I usually focus on healing the past first – without having to spend a lot of time talking about it. Once that unresolved pain and anger is mostly dissolved, clients don’t get triggered as easily or as forcefully.
The next focus is on reducing everyday frustrations. When the little things don't bug you as much, you'll be cooler under pressure and when bigger problems come up. , and have enough presence of mind to use anger management tools instead of losing control.
Note: I don’t do court-mandated anger management. If you live in Fairfax County, call my colleague Gary Niki at 202-241-0944.

While there are often mental components to anger you'll want to address with a talk therapist, there's also a physical component that we can work on using somatic approaches:
Out of control anger is often your nervous system's "fight" response kicking in so intensely that it's hard to keep your cool. Anger serves an important purpose, but we want to know that we can still stay connected to our best selves even while we are angry.
We can use body-focused techniques to be able to recognize when anger is about to kick in, and to teach your body new ways of responding to that anger. For example, you may find yourself saying to me "I noticed I was getting hot and agitated, so I excused myself for a couple minutes."
You may find yourself able to focus your energy much more quickly than you used to, to come back focused and goal oriented. You may still feel 'mad' but it may be anger that is working for you, in alignment with your values.

Washington Psychological Wellness
Counselor/Therapist
Anger is a normal, healthy emotion that can be used to communicate important boundaries and needs. Anger becomes unhealthy when it reaches a level of an out-of-control and all-consuming rage. Maladaptive anger can have a lasting detrimental impact on one’s relationships, work, and overall mental well-being. At Washington Psychological Wellness, our therapists work to help you understand the core mechanisms of your anger. Often, anger is a manifestation of a repressed feeling, such as deep sadness or shame. Your therapist will provide you the safe space needed to process, explore, and work through your anger to eventually replace learned maladaptive emotional dysregulation patterns with more adaptive ways of communicating. We aim to teach emotional regulation and adaptive communication patterns. Washington Psychological Wellness is currently accepting new clients. Telehealth (online) therapy services are available. Baltimore residents face significant mental health challenges tied to the city's high rates of violence, poverty, and opioid addiction, driving strong demand for trauma-informed and addiction-focused therapists. The city is home to Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Maryland Medical Center, and many residents seek private therapy to complement or navigate care through these large institutions. Therapists in Baltimore frequently work with PTSD, grief, and community-level trauma across the city's diverse and deeply rooted neighborhoods. The proximity to Washington, D.C. also means many therapists serve commuters managing the particular stresses of a political and federal work environment.
