Bethesda, Maryland therapist: Dr. Patricia Webbink, psychologist
Codependency

Dr. Patricia Webbink

Psychologist, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology
I have worked with codependents for many years. John Bradshaw, a popular author and leader in this field, referred to me as a “Master Therapist.” The concept of Codependency, though not included in the Diagnostic Manual, points to relationships that have become dysfunctional with one person so enmeshed in being the Caregiver (the Giver) that they enable the other (the Taker) to constantly receive without giving support and care in return. This dynamic can occur in any kind of relationship, not just romantic. Although the role of the Giver arises out of loving kindness, there is an element of attachment to being the “Rescuer” that enables the Taker to continue their dysfunctional behaviors (e.g. substance abuse, gambling, sex addiction, abusiveness, etc.) as the Giver inadvertently shields them from the results of their dysfunctional behaviors. If this dynamic is not interrupted, the Giver eventually becomes exhausted, frustrated and burned out, in need of the support, healing, and self-awareness provided through therapy. I offer free zoom seminars, which give you a taste of how I can help with relationship issues. Please feel free to call for a consultation: 301-229-8000.

Codependency is a behavioral condition in a relationship where one person enables another person's addiction, poor mental health, immaturity, irresponsibility, or under-achievement. Among the core characteristics of codependency is an excessive reliance on other people for approval and a sense of identity. In our work together, we will explore/examine the issues related to the behavior and improve the reasoning behind co-dependency.

In my practice, I integrate elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients with codependency develop mindfulness skills and cultivate self-compassion while committing to actions that align with their values and autonomy. Additionally, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques assist clients in identifying and challenging maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors associated with codependency, promoting healthier boundaries and self-esteem. Incorporating Person-Centered Therapy principles, I provide a supportive and empathetic environment for clients to explore their emotions and experiences, empowering them to reconnect with their authentic selves and build healthier relationships.

Seattle, Washington therapist: Aaron Kapin, somatic experiencing practitioner
Codependency

Aaron Kapin

Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, SEP, LMT
I use Somatic Experiencing to help you tune into your own wants and needs so you can start learning to have a clearer sense of your boundaries, as well as the strength to set them. A lot of relationships are labeled as 'codependent', but sometimes it can be more accurate to say that it's become easier for you to guess at what your partner wants than it is to know what you want. Once you get more connected to what you want, it can become easier to have those conversations with your partner, and easier to stand strong in your needs.

Atlanta, Georgia therapist: Mikela Hallmark, therapist
Codependency

Mikela Hallmark

Therapist, MS, LPC, LMHC
Codependency isn’t just about “losing yourself in a relationship.” It’s a survival strategy — often born from childhood environments where attunement, safety, or emotional permission were inconsistent or absent. In our work together, we gently unravel these patterns, not by labeling you as broken, but by honoring the intelligence of the parts that learned to over-function, over-give, and under-receive. I help clients build internal boundaries before external ones — learning to recognize where they end and others begin. Together, we practice new relational templates rooted in self-trust, emotional honesty, and reciprocity. This isn’t about becoming “independent” in a vacuum. It’s about reclaiming yourself without losing connection — perhaps for the first time.

Narberth, Pennsylvania therapist: Michelle Bloom, PsyD, psychologist
Codependency

Michelle Bloom, PsyD

Psychologist, PsyD, PsyPact
Setting healthy boundaries is something many of us did not effectively learn in childhood, even in the most well meaning and loving of families. We have, instead, learned to live life to serve others and to prioritize the needs of others, even when doing so harms ourselves. My approach is to help my clients create healthy boundaries, advocate for the self, learn to communicate our needs clearly and directly, and then learn to act upon the needs we have outlined to those we love so we can cultivate healthy and mutually effective relationships. Cutting the ties of codependency is central to this process: staying in one's own lane, letting others solve their own problems, offering compassion and help when asked, letting go of the rescue fantasy, living without an emotional hangover, and learning to accept that there is much we cannot control.
