Bethesda, Maryland therapist: Louisa Lombard, licensed professional counselor
OCD

Louisa Lombard

Licensed Professional Counselor, LCPC, LPCC, PPS
OCD can be mild to debilitating, and is often missed and treated as anxiety. I've found that OCD and Health Anxiety, as well as Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs, ie. skin picking, hair pulling/tweezing, nail/cuticle biting) can sometimes co-exist together. I'm trained in treating OCD through two of the primary evidence based OCD treatment modalities -Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP/ExRP). I-CBT is a newer evidence based treatment for OCD that focuses on gaining certainty versus pushing yourself into uncertainty, and is thought to be a gentler approach. There are many types of OCD and the thought-based "invisible" types are the most often missed forms of OCD, often called the "Pure O subtype" meaning that the obsessions/thoughts are there, but that the compulsions are mental and not outwardly visible, as we've come to expect from what we see about OCD in the media/social media. There are many forms of OCD, including Postpartum OCD, Relational (romantic as well as platonic) OCD, Harm OCD, Perfectionism/Just Right OCD, Contamination OCD, Scrupulosity or Religious OCD, Checking OCD, Obsessional OCD, Sexual Orientation OCD, Pedophilia OCD, and Superstitious OCD, among others. I'm trained in treating BFRBs using multiple modalities including, Habit Reversal Training, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Comprehensive Model for the Behavioral Treatment of BFRB and DBT, which help to reduce the symptoms of BFRBs.

In my treatment for OCD, I provide a specialized approach centered on Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold standard for breaking the cycle of intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors. By combining this with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I empower you to reframe your relationship with uncertainty and regain the freedom to focus on what truly matters.

Dr. Tice specializes in the treatment of OCD, utilizing the "gold standard" treatment for OCD: Exposure and Response Prevention (E/RP). ERP is a highly effective intervention for OCD, and involves learning concrete skills for managing obsessive, intrusive thoughts and the corresponding distressing emotions. OCD manifests uniquely in each person, and Dr. Tice works with each client to identify their specific OCD experience, as well as the individualized treatment plan for them. OCD results in great distress and fear for day-to-day tasks and situations. It is our human nature to try to quell this fear; however, this can be part of what keeps the cycle going. I use an exposure based approach (ERP) of exploring your fears and responses while gaining confidence through practicing actions.

I use exposure therapy to help clients with OCD gradually face feared thoughts, situations, or sensations while learning to resist compulsive responses. The process is collaborative and carefully paced, helping clients build tolerance for uncertainty and reduce the power OCD has over daily life. Over time, exposure therapy supports lasting relief by teaching the brain that anxiety can be experienced without giving in to compulsions.

One could say that we all need a bit of Obsessive Compulsiveness to keep our homes and lives organized, but too much of it can result in dysfunctional behaviors like repeatedly checking the stove to see if it was left on, obsessive hand-washing irritating one's skin, etc. The movie “As Good As It Gets” is an example of a man whose total existence is negatively impacted by extreme Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Check out my monthly, free, zoom seminars. Please feel free to call for further information and/or a consultation: 301-229-8000.

Ellicott City, Maryland therapist: Leslie Worley, licensed clinical social worker
OCD

Leslie Worley

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW-C
At Waves of Wisdom Therapy, treatment for OCD is about learning how to live meaningfully with the presence of obsessional doubts. We will learn how to make room for the full range of human experience without being pulled under the current of the OCD cycle. All of the work we do is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT reminds us that pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional. We can’t control our thoughts or emotions, but we can choose how we respond to them, and in doing so, move toward a life guided by purpose, presence, and self-compassion. From this foundation, we integrate two powerful, evidence-based methods: Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) in order to help you understand and change the patterns that keep OCD alive.

Saint Paul, Minnesota therapist: Joe Groninga, psychologist
OCD

Joe Groninga

Psychologist, PsyD, LP
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can be a very debilitating set of symptoms and is something for which I use a therapy called Exposure and Response Prevention (ExRP or ERP). This therapy is widely considered to be the most effective treatment for OCD available. I will teach you how to approach situations that create obsessive thinking and emotional distress and how to simultaneously resist acting on urges to engage in your compulsive behavior. The result is the ability to be in these situations with significantly less distress and without overwhelming compulsive urges. People with OCD are typically amazed at what they can achieve through this therapy.
