Recently, I was contacted by a woman who said she wanted to deal with her binge drinking. When I asked her how often she binged, she said "pretty much every night". After further discussion, she said she would love to quit drinking altogether so we set that intention, though she thought it would be difficult. After one session, which occurred right before holiday season, she wrote back saying she had made it through Christmas and New Years without a drink and, in addition, had been able to make better decisions around a broader range of issues, because of the tools I had given her. In addition, I have worked with binge eating, smoking addiction, etc.

Wayne G. Siegel, PhD, ABPP

Psychologist, Clinical Psychology
Substance use can be a coping strategy that once felt adaptive—but over time, it may begin to erode your relationships, health, and sense of self. Whether you're navigating early recovery, relapse prevention, or long-standing patterns of use, I offer a structured, evidence-based approach tailored to your unique history and goals. Drawing on over three decades of clinical experience, I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients understand the function of their substance use, build sustainable coping strategies, and reconnect with their values. Treatment is collaborative, nonjudgmental, and grounded in scientific research—designed to support both behavioral change and emotional healing. I work with high-functioning adults, healthcare professionals, and individuals facing complex life transitions. Whether you're seeking clarity, accountability, or long-term transformation, we’ll develop a personalized roadmap that honors your strengths and equips you with practical tools for change.

Addictions and Substance Abuse can provide a heavy burden on your life and impede your life journey. They present a false narrative to you while destroying everything you love and have worked hard to achieve. However, the good news about narratives is they can be edited and rewritten to tell the best story about a overcomer and survivor. Let's rewrite your narrative together!

In addressing addictions and substance abuse, our approach focuses on understanding the root causes of addiction, breaking the cycle of dependency, and promoting sustainable recovery. We recognize that every journey of substance misuse is unique, and as such, we endeavor to provide personalized, compassionate care tailored to the distinct circumstances and needs of each client. Specialized Focus on Addiction Recovery * Comprehensive Assessment: We begin with a thorough evaluation to understand the history and scope of the substance use, alongside any co-occurring mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. This holistic perspective ensures that all underlying factors are treated concurrently. * Individualized Counseling Plans: Based on the initial assessment, we develop a customized treatment plan that may include methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and Relapse Prevention strategies. Our plans are adaptable to the evolving needs of each individual throughout their recovery process. * Skill Building: A significant focus of therapy is on building skills for managing cravings, avoiding triggers, and coping with daily stresses without relying on substances. These skills are vital for maintaining long-term sobriety and preventing relapse. * Supportive Environment: We foster a supportive and non-judgmental environment where clients can freely discuss their experiences and challenges. The space is a safe zone where individuals are encouraged to explore their emotions and behaviors without fear of criticism. * Family Involvement: Recognizing the role of family dynamics in recovery, we offer family therapy sessions to educate loved ones about addiction and how they can best support the individual’s journey toward recovery. * Continuous Support and Aftercare: Recovery from addiction is an ongoing process. We provide continuous support and aftercare planning to assist individuals in maintaining their sobriety after they've completed initial treatment phases. This includes connection to support groups, ongoing counseling, and routine check-ins. Transformative Goals Our ultimate goal is not just to help clients abstain from addictive substances but to enable them to understand and reshape their life patterns. Through empowerment and self-discovery, individuals are aided in rebuilding their lives, mending relationships, and finding new sources of fulfillment and meaning beyond their addiction. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction or substance abuse, please reach out. Together, we can work towards recovery and a renewed sense of control over your life.

Ellicott City, Maryland therapist: Stacey Hellman, licensed clinical social worker
Substance Abuse

Stacey Hellman

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW-C
I can treat any addictive behavior with the same approach, including gambling, sex addiction, video gaming, drugs/alcohol, other non-suicidal self-harm like cutting, and eating disorder behavior. My view of addictions and treatment approach are different than that of other therapists. Rather than label certain behaviors as "problems" or "bad" or "wrong", I reframe them as coping strategies that unfortunately have caused problems in one or more areas of life. The behavior itself isn't the problem; there are underlying issues that need to be addressed such as unresolved trauma, grief/loss, social isolation, lack of tools to handle intense emotions, low self-worth, and/or lack of meaningful spiritual connection. Once clients access self-compassion and stop judging themselves for engaging in behaviors, they are able to appreciate the fact that they are just trying to cope with the challenges of life as best they can. When we can let go of the shame and stigma attached to addiction, it's much easier to be open to making healthy changes and developing alternative behaviors that actually help and don't cause more harm. Together we will decode and uncover what the underlying issues are that need to be addressed in order to be able to let go of the addictive behavior. I try to focus on what the behavior is communicating and what need the client is trying to meet by engaging in the behavior.

I use a harm reduction philosophy and motivational interviewing strategies to help clients explore the role substance use is playing in their lives and how this differs from what they want out of life. We'll work together to determine a goal that fits your values, and come up with a plan that addresses the motivations underlying your use (eg, coping with emotions or stress, seeking pleasure/enjoyment, engaging socially). As you get closer to your goals, we'll anticipate possible future challenges so you feel confident navigating difficult situations without returning to old habits.

Clear Path Counseling and Wellness Center

Licensed Professional Counselor, MA. LPC
Brad provides trauma-informed therapy for individuals struggling with addiction, substance abuse, compulsive behaviors, internet addiction, and gaming addiction. He works with clients seeking deeper healing from the emotional pain, trauma, stress, and unhealthy patterns that often contribute to addictive behaviors and difficulty breaking destructive cycles. His goal is to help clients restore emotional balance, improve functioning, strengthen relationships, and create meaningful and lasting change. Many individuals struggling with addiction feel stuck in patterns of shame, isolation, emotional overwhelm, anxiety, depression, or self-destructive coping behaviors. Addiction is often connected to unresolved trauma, difficult life experiences, emotional pain, attachment wounds, or chronic stress. This is one reason why simply being told to “stop” is rarely effective. Lasting recovery requires understanding and healing the underlying issues driving the behavior. Brad takes a holistic and personalized approach to addiction counseling, recognizing that healing involves the mind, body, emotions, relationships, and sense of purpose. Therapy is collaborative, supportive, and tailored to each client’s individual needs, goals, and experiences. Clients are provided with a safe, non-judgmental environment where they can openly explore past trauma, triggers, unhealthy coping patterns, emotional struggles, and the deeper causes of addiction. As an experienced trauma therapist and EMDR therapist, Brad integrates EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), trauma-focused counseling, emotional regulation strategies, and evidence-based therapeutic approaches to support recovery and long-term healing. Therapy focuses on helping clients process unresolved trauma, reduce compulsive behaviors, build self-awareness, strengthen emotional resilience, and develop healthier coping skills and relationships. Brad believes recovery is about more than simply stopping a behavior or substance use. The goal is to help clients reconnect with themselves, restore hope and self-worth, improve emotional well-being, and create a healthier and more fulfilling life without relying on substances or addictive behaviors to cope or feel better about themselves. Healing and recovery are possible. With the right support, clients can move beyond addiction, regain control of their lives, strengthen relationships, and redefine who they are today. Virtual counseling and online trauma-focused therapy sessions are available, providing confidential and convenient access to professional addiction and trauma therapy from the comfort of home.

Bethesda, Maryland therapist: Dr. Patricia Webbink, psychologist
Substance Abuse

Dr. Patricia Webbink

Psychologist, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology
For many years, I have offered Substance Abuse and Addiction program for individuals, couples & groups. The root of addiction often lies in dysfunctional family experiences in childhood. Whatever form an addiction takes-- whether overeating, gambling drug or alcohol abuse, cigarette smoking, video-game or pornography or sex addiction, the addictive cycle often numbs feelings or serves as an attempt to fill an inner emptiness. I use various effective methods to help clients stop or decrease addiction and replace it with more functional ways of dealing with needs and feelings. I have developed a safe and effective approach using guided imagery, movement, and music leading to a therapeutic, altered state of consciousness, that can serve as a substitute for the high that one gets with drugs. Adolescents as well as adults learn to say no to drinking, smoking, over-eating and drugs through my programs. They learn to recognize how they are putting their education, health, family ties, and social life at risk. Often they are “self-medicating” their depression or anxiety with addiction, and they find far better ways of dealing with these problems. My colleagues and I also facilitate family and friend interventions for drug and alcohol abuse. Over many years, I have worked with Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOAs) including presenting my work with ACOAs at a meeting for psychologists at the Maryland Psychological Association. Many ACOAs become alcoholics themselves or become involved in relationships with alcoholics or substance abusers. They are at risk for other dysfunctional or even abusive relationships. I see many clients for Stopping Smoking and present successful Smoking Cessation programs to organizations and law firms. I have also presented seminars at the Maryland, DC and Virginia Lung Associations on Breathing and Smoking Cessation. I attend many seminars on Eating Disorders to stay up to date on the latest developments in the field. I have produced CD’s and Tapes (available on Bandcamp) to assist Weight Loss and Smoking cessation. I have also presented a radio program and led workshops on Mindful Eating. I regularly offer free zoom seminars, that can help individuals deal with Substance Abuse and weight loss. Please feel free to call for the latest schedule or for a consultation: 301-229-8000
