We bring 14+ years of experience with complex trauma, dissociation care and recovery, memory reconsolidation and other neurodevelopmental care, attachmemt care and support... We specialize in CSAS - Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Colonial and/or Narcissistic/Trauma Recovery. There is a deep understanding of the internal and external affects of trauma recovery. Care providers are sometimes also survivors who have been through the recovery and have deep compassion for the process. We look at and work with intersectional issues of oppression. We also recognize many instances of socially derived trauma are intergenerational, lateralized and or oppressive and ongoing, clients are often addressing childhood, as well as, adult trauma from a non-self-shaming compassion based approach such as, Intersectional Care, Parts Work including TIST -- Trauma Informed Stabilization Theory, IFS -- Internal Family Systems; Somatic Work and distance CranioSacral; DBR, Polyvagal and Attachment Theory based approaches... non dominant handwriting, addiction care, memory reconsolidation and existential/coherence level care. We also integrate understanding of Transformative and Social Justice to bring awareness to internalized oppression that can keep survivors looped into dangerous experiences. We have a decolonizing orientation to care! This work is a special calling, during and post trauma recovery, folks may even feel more affirmed and move towards creative and fulfilling Self actualization in their process. We welcome POC and GM folks with intersecting care needs. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Billingshurst, England therapist: Rachel Bates, registered psychotherapist

Rachel Bates

Registered Psychotherapist, M Phil - Counselling & Psychotherapy; M A Psychology
Emotional and psychological trauma can be the outcome of extraordinarily stressful events that involve a threat to life or safety. This can shatter one's sense of security, a feeling of being overwhelmed and isolated even if it does not involve physical harm. It is not the objective circumstances that determine whether an event is traumatic but the subjective emotional experience of it. Post-traumatic Stress is the stress that follows a traumatic event either during the first month after the event or even after a few months after the event. When the individual re-experiences or relives the traumatic event in the form of flashbacks, nightmares, repetitive and distressing images or sensations, sometimes involving bodily reactions such as sweating, pain, feeling sick or trembling, it can result with excessive guilt and/or shame. The psychological distress affects the physiological functions and this then becomes a vicious cycle.

Trauma can leave lasting imprints on the brain and body, showing up as anxiety, flashbacks, hypervigilance, or a sense of being stuck in the past. Healing is possible—your nervous system can be guided back into balance. In our work together, I use evidence-based approaches such as BWRT® and neuroscience-based therapies to gently release trauma patterns at their root. I also integrate HeartMath® techniques, which help regulate the stress response, restore heart–brain coherence, and build resilience. The goal is not to erase what happened, but to help you feel safer in yourself, regain control, and move forward with greater calm and strength.

Trauma is the emotional wound that is created in response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event such as the loss of a loved one, or perhaps suffering an accident, abuse or surviving a natural disaster. Equally trauma can result from the drip, drip, drip of negative or abusive circumstances outside our control, that impact our sense of safety, trust and ‘okay-ness’ in the world around us. The emotional impact of trauma can result in long term physical and mental symptoms that make it difficult to function in our everyday lives. It wreaks havoc with our relationships with others. Depression and anxiety very often result from the experience of trauma. Talking therapy can help us to validate our experiences and the feelings, or denial of feelings, that go hand in hand with trauma. In time we can hopefully reframe what causes us to suffer and develop skills to cope, so that we can move forward in our lives.

The effects of trauma may be long-lasting and debilitating, and can include PTSD, depression, anxiety, panic, phobias, difficult personal relationships, poor quality sleep, stress and memory problems. Mind-body therapies help to calm and relax the body, release trauma, and improve sleep. Through psycho-education you will learn how trauma affects your brain, and get to know and understand yourself, your behaviours, and your motivations better.

Counsellor/Therapist, MBACP (Accred)
Trauma is an emotional response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms a person's ability to cope. It can result from various experiences, including accidents, natural disasters, war, abuse and loss. PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety and uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Complex PTSD stems from prolonged or repeated trauma, often occurring during childhood - it includes symptoms of PTSD along with additional difficulties such as emotional regulation issues, dissociation and interpersonal problems. Somatic resources focus on the body and it's sensations, aiming to release trauma stored in the physical self. Techniques include breath work, movement, touch and awareness exercises. These methods help clients reconnect with their body, fostering a sense of safety and presence. Using parts work, based on the IFS model - an evidence based therapeutic model that views the mind as composed of multiple parts, each with their own perspective and roles. It's particularly effective for trauma as it helps clients understand and integrate fragmented selves. Healing occurs as clients learn to listen to and care for wounded parts, reducing the intensity of protector parts whose symptoms manifest as rigidity, avoidance or intense reactions and unwanted behaviours. Integration involves creating harmony among parts, leading to a more cohesive and balanced self. A trauma-informed approach is grounded in understanding and responding to the effects of trauma. It focuses on creating a safe and supportive environment, emphasising clients' strengths and resilience. Integration involves combining somatic resources, parts work, IFS and trauma-informed care in a flexible and client-centred way. This holistic approach addresses trauma's effects on the body, mind and spirit, fostering comprehensive healing. It is imperative that my clients feel safe and supported in our sessions. I cultivate a warm, non-judgmental environment, respecting your boundaries and pacing. Interventions are tailored to each person's unique needs, incorporating somatic exercises, parts work, IFS techniques, and trauma-informed principles as appropriate. Building resilience involves supporting my client's in developing coping strategies, enhance self-awareness and build supportive relationships.

Traumatic events can lead to sleeplessness, flashbacks, anxiety, depression or other symptoms in our bodies, in our way of relating to others, and in our habits. We can work somatically- which means that you won't have to rehash all of the most difficult events. We can work with the tools of somatic experiencing: grounding, finding resources, and getting re-oriented to the here and now so that your body, your emotions and thoughts can restore safety. Get in touch and we can discuss- in a gentle and non-invasive way- how we might work together to help you feel some relief from past traumatic events.

Trauma isn't what happened to you—it's what's still happening inside you because of what happened. It's the hypervigilance that won't turn off. The flashbacks or nightmares. The way certain sounds, smells, or situations throw you right back. Your body holding onto something your mind is trying to forget. PTSD gets diagnosed when these symptoms meet clinical criteria, but plenty of people carry trauma that never gets labeled. Either way, your nervous system is still responding to a threat that's no longer there. That's what we need to address. I've spent 35 years working with adults carrying childhood trauma—abuse, neglect, households where you never felt safe. But trauma can also come from single events: accidents, assaults, losses. What matters isn't comparing severity—what matters is that your system got overwhelmed and is still stuck in that survival response. We work carefully and at your pace. I use approaches like Schema Therapy, IFS, Somatic Experiencing, DBT—whatever actually helps your nervous system understand the danger is over. This isn't about reliving everything in detail. It's about processing what happened in a way that lets your body finally rest. You're not broken. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it learned to do to keep you alive. We can help it learn something different.
