Amy L. Holdbrooks, LLC

Counselor/Therapist, MA, NCC, ALC, BSW
Even fleeting feelings of depression must not be minimized or dismissed. When depression sets in, it can feel ominous and dark, leaving one with an overwhelming sense of despair. Just as humans are complex, so are their reactions to the unpleasant onset of emotion. Depression is idiosyncratic. [One’s response to it is resolute, distinctive, and characteristic of only their composition.]

We all feel down sometimes. We might be grieving a loss of some kind, experiencing a difficult and upsetting change in our life or relationship, or feeling discouraged, disappointed, or confused. These feelings are normal human emotions we experience as we are on this bumpy journey called life. Some days we feel down and we don't know why. And then sometimes those days turn into weeks, and months or years and we find that we have lost motivation to even get out of bed and complete daily tasks, let alone tackle the additional and sometimes unpredictable obligations that life presents us. This becomes a downward spiral into the depths of despair that we can no longer name. We've lost ourselves, who we once were, and have no clear vision for the future. We begin to experience a sense of hopelessness and helplessness and a belief that we will never feel whole again. We feel like our brain is in a perpetual fog with no energy to cut through it. Depression can be so all-consuming that we begin to have thoughts of harming ourselves, whether to end our life or simply to bring about physical pain to ease the emotional pain. Sometimes, in those dark moments, our brain tries to convince us that it is the only rational option--or the only way out of a dismal situation. Sometimes it takes the observation of another family member or friend to challenge us to get help. Sometimes there is that small voice within us that urges us that it is time to seek out help from an unbiased and objective professional. As your therapist, I am compassionate, empathetic, and sensitive in my integrative approach to depression. I believe that cutting through such a fog will require very slow, deliberate steps so as to not become overwhelming and discouraging for you. Your therapy will be designed to empower and equip you to put you back in control over your own life.
