Daniel Klassen
Psychologist, Provisional, (P7619) with CAP in Alberta & Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC 19147) with BCACC, for elsewhere in Canada
Trauma refers to any deeply distressing or disturbing experience that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope. These experiences can range from physical or sexual assault to natural disasters, serious accidents, or witnessing acts of violence. When trauma remains unresolved, it can lead to lasting psychological effects, including the development of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Complex PTSD (CPTSD).
PTSD typically emerges after a single traumatic incident and is characterized by symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, heightened anxiety, and intrusive thoughts. In contrast, CPTSD results from prolonged or repeated trauma—especially during times when escape or protection is not possible, such as in childhood or in abusive relationships. Those living with CPTSD often grapple with emotional dysregulation, persistent negative self-beliefs, and enduring difficulties in forming or maintaining relationships.
Dissociation—a state in which a person disconnects from their thoughts, feelings, memories, or even their sense of identity—is also a common response among trauma survivors. This protective mechanism can make individuals feel emotionally numb, detached from their surroundings, or as if they are observing their life from outside their body.
Daniel, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional Level 2 (CCTP-II), has advanced training in treating trauma, CPTSD, and dissociative symptoms. He works with clients to process and resolve trauma, address emotional wounds, and develop healthier, more adaptive coping strategies. His integrative approach may include therapy, medication, and other supportive interventions—empowering individuals to reclaim control, restore inner balance, and rebuild their lives with renewed strength and resilience.
Daniel offers both brief screening for trauma, PTSD and CPTSD and comprehensive, customized assessments. He welcomes inquiries regarding this and other psychological testing services he provides.

Kate Hollowell Sheldon
Psychologist, MC, R.Psych.
My career is based on assessing and treating trauma and PTSD. I work with this on a daily basis in the correctional services system and within the community. Trauma can be experienced in many different ways and not everyone expresses it the same. As well, trauma can be suppressed and can come up decades after the event took place. We work from a bottom up approach to create safety in the body and to work with the nervous system before any processing occurs. I have worked with men and women who have experienced trauma as part of their work (military, first responders etc.) and within relationships (abuse), or with natural disaster (floods). Regardless of the nature of the trauma, we can work on moving through it so it does not affect so much of your life in such an acute way.

For trauma and PTSD I work mostly with emotionally-focused and Hakami methods to address these concerns. We start slow, we create a strong sense of safety and comfort between us. I like to make sure you have coping and grounding skills to use as we work together and you go about your day. We slowly unpack some trauma as it begins to feel okay too, we slow down again, talk more, feel your pain.

Trauma is often viewed as an “event” or “experience” like a terrible accident, abuse, a disaster, a death, etc. And it is a common view that the event or experience has to be considered “big” like these examples. And while such events and experiences can definitely be traumatic, other views expand on this, such as with the thinking that:
>Trauma is not an event or an experience as such, it’s what’s stored in the brain and the body. (There is a book called “The Body Keeps the Score” by Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk describing this.)
>“Traumatic experiences” don’t have to be so “big”, and what is traumatic for you might not be traumatic for someone else, depending on things like if someone is more sensitive than someone else.
Also, sometimes events enacted, witnessed, or experienced can be impactful because they run counter to your sense of morality and ethics, and these can be difficult to recover from too.
While some people spontaneously recover from trauma over time with the love and support of family and friends, others may suffer from effects of lasting trauma, which can vary greatly from person to person but might include living with deep emotional pain, avoiding reminders of the event or experience, feeling depressed or nervous, feeling like the event is still happening, feeling very angry or guilty, having difficulty sleeping, judgments of self or others, or other effects, long after the actual experience has passed.
In these circumstances, the support, guidance, and assistance of a counsellor can often be helpful in lessening the impact of the event or events on your life in the here and now, such as by helping you find healthy ways to cope with the lingering effects of the trauma, though certainly the road can sometimes be difficult.
If you feel you are living with the effects of trauma and are wanting a more satisfying and values-directed life, I might be able to assist.
