Trauma and PTSD are my major specialty. Even if we don't consciously know of any traumas that are holding us back, inner-child work always reveals to us negative thought patterns and subconscious limiting beliefs that have made it hard for us to live in alignment with our truest, most authentic and confident selves! Having been a PTSD survivor myself, an intuitive, highly sensitive and compassionate soul living a human experience, I wish to gift you all the tools that took me several years to learn within a matter of months. To ensure you have continual support and empower yourselves to make the changes needed to overcome ANY difficulties. If I can do it, so can you! More about my story can be found on LinkedIn, or my website; www.intuitive-guidance.ca

I have extensive training for working with people who have experienced traumatic events and who may have PTSD signs/symtpoms. Counsellor/Therapist, CCC, MSc, MBA
I understand trauma to be an experience that plays out in the body: strong sensations overwhelm its capacity to tolerate everyday occurrences; triggers and memories rip it out of the present and throw it back into the past; and being around other people leaves it feeling like a fragile object. How might we learn to listen compassionately to what our body has to say about trauma? And how might our body come to feel once it knows that it's being listened to?

Trauma is often viewed as an “event” or “experience” like a terrible accident, abuse, a disaster, a death, etc. And it is a common view that the event or experience has to be considered “big” like these examples. And while such events and experiences can definitely be traumatic, other views expand on this, such as with the thinking that: >Trauma is not an event or an experience as such, it’s what’s stored in the brain and the body. (There is a book called “The Body Keeps the Score” by Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk describing this.) >“Traumatic experiences” don’t have to be so “big”, and what is traumatic for you might not be traumatic for someone else, depending on things like if someone is more sensitive than someone else. Also, sometimes events enacted, witnessed, or experienced can be impactful because they run counter to your sense of morality and ethics, and these can be difficult to recover from too. While some people spontaneously recover from trauma over time with the love and support of family and friends, others may suffer from effects of lasting trauma, which can vary greatly from person to person but might include living with deep emotional pain, avoiding reminders of the event or experience, feeling depressed or nervous, feeling like the event is still happening, feeling very angry or guilty, having difficulty sleeping, judgments of self or others, or other effects, long after the actual experience has passed. In these circumstances, the support, guidance, and assistance of a counsellor can often be helpful in lessening the impact of the event or events on your life in the here and now, such as by helping you find healthy ways to cope with the lingering effects of the trauma, though certainly the road can sometimes be difficult. If you feel you are living with the effects of trauma and are wanting a more satisfying and values-directed life, I might be able to assist.

Your experience of trauma can be something that is impacting your life and mental health in a variety of ways. By working with a therapist you can begin to safely explore and process your experiences. Together we can begin recognizing some of the physical sensations, thought patterns and behaviours that might be attributed to traumatic experiences. In our work together you can expect to laugh, cry, practice new skills, and explore new ways of living.

Calgary, Alberta therapist: Laura Romero, psychologist
Trauma and PTSD

Laura Romero

Psychologist, MC, R.Psych
Trauma and PTSD are very dynamic subjects. There is an extraordinary amount of work that the therapist and client need to do together before trauma can be addressed and processed. I have training in EMDR, taking a trauma-informed approach, attachment therapy and I take a holistic approach so clients (hopefully) feel like that are in a safe and caring space. Trauma shows up for people in a variety of ways and can hijack their daily lives. I'm here to support clients on their journey to moving through their trauma, so eventually they can put some time and space between them and their trauma, which ultimately gives them more control over their lives.
