Vancouver, British Columbia therapist: Karen Baker, registered psychotherapist
Object Relations

Karen Baker

Registered Psychotherapist, RP, CTP Dipl
We humans are all a little mysterious to ourselves — carrying patterns, reactions, and feelings we don't fully understand, and often facing them alone. Anxiety, low mood, and chronic stress aren't random, they're signals. A nervous system that learned, early on, to stay alert, brace for impact, or manage more than it should have. Even when the original circumstances are long gone, the alarm can keep sounding: in our bodies, our reactions, our relationships; making us say yes when we wish we said no, or people-pleasing when we are already depleted. What might feel like a flaw often reveals itself as an adaptation to the environment we grew up in — necessary at the time, still faithfully following a rulebook that no longer fits, never having had the chance to stand down. There is no fixed route. Rather, I offer companionship: an experienced presence willing to go into uncertain territory with you, without rushing or minimizing what you're carrying. I've made this kind of journey before, and I won't leave your side when it gets uncertain. Although there is no map, the process tends to follow a general shape: building steadiness first, noticing patterns as they surface, processing what's been exiled at a sustainable pace, and eventually finding your way back to shore. Healing tends to require working with the body and nervous system directly, not just talking things through. Those painful or shameful parts don't need fixing, they need understanding and accepting. Over time, the experience of being heard, believed and attuned-to grooves an embodied sense of safety. The nervous system can more easily move out of survival mode allowing shorter recovery after stress, more patience in hard conversations, or restful, restorative sleep. What once felt monstrous often reveals itself as misunderstood: a part of you that was only ever trying to protect you, or tell you something true. A space where all of you is welcome. Before training as a psychotherapist, I spent 13 years practicing as a chiropractor, which shaped my deep respect for the mind-body connection in healing. I offer a free introductory call (30–50 minutes) to test the waters and see whether this approach is right for you — even if you're not sure yet what that is.

Hypnotherapist, PhD
Something in you knows that what you're carrying runs deeper than the presenting problem. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, capable, and outwardly composed-yet internally they live with anxiety, depression, chronic tension or pain, relentless self-criticism, or a sense that something essential is blocked, muted, or just out of reach. These struggles may surface in mood, in the body, in behavior, or in relationships-including sexuality and intimacy-but they are rarely contained to any one area. They tend to reflect deeper emotional and relational patterns formed early in life, often before language, that continue to shape how a person approaches closeness, vulnerability, agency, pleasure, and self-expression. My work centers on how early experience shapes the capacity for self-regulation, desire, connection, and meaning throughout life-and particularly on how people come to know what they need and want, how they learn to express or inhibit those impulses, and what happens when these capacities become conflicted, constricted, or difficult to sustain. I integrate psychoanalytic hypnotherapy, somatic awareness, and clinical sexology within a reflective, depth-oriented process. Hypnosis functions as a central clinical tool-creating conditions for deeper internal contact with emotional, bodily, and unconscious experience that can be difficult to reach through conversation alone. The aim is not only relief from symptoms, but the development of a more coherent and compassionate relationship with one's inner life: sensations, emotions, impulses, and desires. This work is oriented toward lasting psychological change-and toward greater freedom in how one relates to oneself, one's body, and one's capacity for connection, authenticity, and vitality. It is best suited to those ready to move beyond symptom management toward something more fundamental.
