Trauma immediately causes a change in our physiology and readies our body to fight, flee or freeze. Trauma embeds itself in our brains and bodies, perhaps partly because of the human will to survive. We have to both understand it and gently take away its power. Trauma is unique: what is traumatic for one person may not be traumatic to another. Trauma causes a miss-match between what we see and reality, causing us to over-react and plunge our bodies into a state of panic: adrenalin flowing and a state of readiness to fight, flee or freeze. Later, our bodies may be plunged into that same hypervigilance for no real reason: that is PTSD. Often we mask how we feel and act how we 'know we should', widening the gap between how we feel inside and what we do. If we don't recognize trauma straight off, and process and heal it, the result of that trauma builds inside us with every new traumatic event, also leading to PTSD. If you have experienced trauma - something that you personally have found traumatic - come explore it. Don't let it take over your life?

Shannon MacGregor
Licensed Mental Health Counsellor, RTC, MTC, RCS, NARM Therapist
Past and recent painful life experiences such as adverse childhood experiences, domestic abuse,
intergenerational, racial trauma, accidents or any other distressing or disturbing events can cause psychological, emotional, spiritual, and physical trauma, often resulting in unfavorable behaviors and strategies, called coping mechanisms, to manage the emotional stress and pain. Unresolved trauma damages a person’s sense of safety, self-evaluation, as well as their ability to regulate emotions and navigate relationships with self and others. By concentrating on what’s happening in your body, you can get in touch with trauma-related energy and tension, and your natural survival instincts will take over, safely releasing pent-up energy through shaking, crying, and other forms of physical and emotional release.

Michelle Iulianella Counselling & Psychotherapy
Counsellor/Therapist, BEd, MBA, MA, RCC
Generational trauma is the transmission of traumatic experiences and their associated psychological and emotional effects from one generation to the next. This type of trauma can also be passed along through unexamined familial beliefs, sociocultural norms and narratives that describe traumatic events. People with family histories that include systemic oppression or abuse, war, genocide, or marginalization can experience this type of trauma. Generational trauma can manifest as anxiety, depression, anger, guilt, shame, and a sense of disconnectedness or isolation. It can also impact family dynamics and relationships, including the ways in which individuals relate to their families of origin, their partners and their own children. Michelle believes that recognizing and processing generational trauma in therapy is an integral step towards putting an end to the legacy of traumatic experience and promoting healing within individuals and their families.

Dena Marie Counselling & EMDR Therapy
Counsellor/Therapist, MEd, RCC
I support clients who have experienced trauma or are living with PTSD by using EMDR to gently process distressing memories that may still feel overwhelming or “stuck.” This therapy helps your brain reframe these experiences so they no longer dominate your thoughts, emotions, or reactions. Through EMDR, clients often notice reduced triggers, increased emotional regulation, and a stronger sense of safety, control, and resilience in their everyday lives.
