Lincoln Stoller
Counsellor/Therapist, PhD, CHt, CCPCP
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is reputed to be one of the most difficult situations for establishing a positive therapeutic relationship. It's also a huge wastebasket of symptoms into which many difficult and indistinguishable conditions are thrown. As a result, there are many variations on BPD whose common elements are their breadth, depth, variability, and difficulty in building a foundation. I must admit that my interest in BPD is based on curiosity and past experience. I have had success in helping clients who identify themselves as BPD. Marsha Linehan's Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is considered most effective, but if you look at what it involves you'll see it's based on the simple principles of commitment, honesty, responsibility, and self-awareness. Linehan's DBT workbooks simply break this process into stages and provide a program for you to improve in each area, one at a time.
These workbooks have been helpful to my clients because they have been designed for people with issues common to BPD. Not only are these areas of weakness, they're also areas that people with BPD have trouble understanding. I see this as the underlying project: to understand the meaning of commitment, honesty, responsibility, and self-awareness and to strengthen and apply these skills. Everyone can benefit from this, but being committed to this program is essential for people with BPD symptoms. What you're working toward is to condense yourself to a single, grounded, collaborative personality; one that stops engaging in behaviors that are misleading, unrealistic, uncontrolled, and self-sabotaging.
I have clients and I have known people I consider strong candidates for a BPD diagnosis. Most of these people are not seeking help, do not recognize themselves to be the source of their problems, do not understand commitment, honesty, responsibility, and self-awareness, and are not making any effort to change. It's the other people who are diagnosed or who diagnose themselves who are interested in taking responsibility and making a change. If this describes you, then you are in a much better situation than the many BPD people who are unwilling to recognize themselves as the source of their problems. If you think your life can be characterized by the BPD diagnosis, then I encourage you to pursue it as a way to strengthen essential character features. It really doesn't matter what label you carry, it's the motivation to improve yourself that's important.
