Karen Baker

Registered Psychotherapist, RP, CTP Dipl
We humans are all a little mysterious to ourselves — carrying patterns, reactions, and feelings we don't fully understand, and often facing them alone. I'm a Registered Psychotherapist, regulated in Ontario (CRPO), now based in BC. I offer secure online psychodynamic therapy to adults across Ontario and British Columbia. Anxiety, low mood, and chronic stress often aren't random — they're signals. A nervous system that learned, early on, to stay alert, brace for impact, or manage more than it should have. Even when the original circumstances are long gone, the alarm can keep sounding, showing up in our bodies, our reactions, our relationships. Saying yes when we wish we said no, and people-pleasing when we are already depleted. These patterns are adaptations to the environments we grew up in. Sometimes they no longer serve us as adults, and we need to revise our rules for life. My work is to help you learn to read that inner weather — to notice when your system is sounding an alarm, and to find your way back to steadier ground. I don't offer a fixed roadmap. I offer companionship: a steady, experienced presence willing to go into uncertain territory with you, without rushing or minimizing what you're carrying. I won't pretend to have the map, but I've made this kind of journey many times, and I won't leave your side when it gets uncertain. A space where all of you is welcome.

Whatever happened to you, something covered the authentic you. Let's find it. You've been managing. Keeping it together. Showing up for everyone who needs you, handling what needs to be handled, and quietly wondering why it still feels like something is missing or wrong. Maybe you've survived something hard. Maybe you can't quite name what's weighing on you, but you feel it. Maybe life looks fine from the outside, and that almost makes it harder to explain. I became a therapist because I know what it feels like to need support and not receive it. I also know what it feels like to finally find it, and how much that changes everything. My own experience with trauma, addiction, and recovery shapes how I show up: with genuine warmth, without judgment, and with a deep belief that people can move forward no matter how stuck they feel right now. I work with an integrative, person-centered approach and view anxiety, depression, and addiction by looking at underlying trauma. I want to find the root with you and heal the problem, not just manage symptoms. Of course, how struggles show up is different for everyone, I don't believe there can be one-size-fits-all solutions. I listen to your story, understand you through how you survived, and work with you on the patterns that keep showing up. I want to truly listen and help you ask, and answer, "What do you really want now?" If you've been waiting for a sign to reach out, this is it. I'd love to hear from you.

Do you feel emotionally exhausted from always putting everyone else first? Perhaps you've been in a relationship with a narcissistic partner, struggle to set healthy boundaries, or feel trapped in cycles of perfectionism and people pleasing. You may look like you're coping on the outside while feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or never quite "good enough" on the inside. You don't have to continue carrying everything alone. I specialize in helping adults recover from narcissistic abuse, emotional abuse, burnout, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and low self-worth. Together we'll work to understand the patterns that have kept you stuck, heal the wounds beneath them, and build healthier relationships with others and with yourself. Many of my clients are caring, capable, high-functioning people who have spent years taking care of everyone else. They struggle with guilt when saying no, overthink conversations, question themselves after being gaslighted, or feel emotionally drained from unhealthy relationships. Therapy can help you reconnect with your confidence, trust your instincts, and create lasting change. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and practical. I integrate evidence-based therapies while tailoring each session to your unique experiences and goals. My focus is creating a safe, supportive space where you feel understood, not judged. Everyone one has their own life experiences that have been undergone in their own way. I recognize uniqueness in everyone's life and that they have a deep need witnessed and honored in those experiences. My practice is about creating space for every individual's unique feelings, circumstances, and experiences without judgement or interpretation. We collaborate to find the deepest meanings within those experiences and we use that to find direction as how we would like to close a chapter or grow next. Healing from experiences is through finding meaning in them and integrating them into ourselves thereby enabling us to live deeper and more enriching lives.
