Child or Adolescent Issues

Celia Yeung

Counsellor/Therapist, B.A., B.Ed., MC (Counselling), CCC
Is your child needing support in managing big emotions or behaviours? Is your child having challenges with their self-esteem, connecting with others or managing school expectations? I have extensive experience providing counselling services and teaching children and adolescents with various mental health concerns and complex social emotional and learning needs. I can help children and youth explore different challenges that they are facing at a pace that is comfortable for them. When relevant and with parental/caregivers' consent, I may integrate different modalities, for example, use cognitive-behavioural strategies, expressive arts, mindfulness activities and/or sensory tools to support my clients in managing their emotions more effectively, and improve their relationships and overall well-being. Sessions are tailored to your child's individual needs, circumstances and goals. As appropriate, I can provide parents/caregivers with effective ways to support their children in improving their well-being.

Emotionally Focused Therapy is based on the science of attachment. I'll work with your family to help identify the relationships that have become off balance. I work with you to identify and communicate the underlying fears and emotions that may be contributing to negative cycles of interaction and to help establish new, more supportive patterns of engagement.

Licensed Professional Counsellor, Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)
Have you been feeling worthless lately or "not good enough?" Do you sometimes feel like no matter how hard you try, you can't seem to live up to your and other people's standards? If so, you are not alone. Child and adolescent struggles often involve issues around self-esteem due to feeling inadequate or "not good enough". Individuals with low self-esteem often have an intense fear of being judged. Their thoughts typically involve beliefs around incompetence or inadequacy, and some may even believe that they are defective. These harsh self-judgments often interfere with the ability to live a fulfilling life largely due to avoiding new behaviours that may re-affirm feelings of incompetence or inadequacy. In therapy, I help clients gain insight into some of the thoughts and emotions that prevent the establishment of self-worth and self-love. Through various therapeutic approaches, including cognitive restructuring and a focus on values-oriented work, we work collaboratively to help move away from self-defeating behaviours, such as avoidance, and closer toward experiences that promote healing.
