Shaunna Grams, Grams Counselling Services Inc.
Counsellor/Therapist, Registered Clinical Counsellor
Identifying your anxiety signals and their origins allows you to intervene in responsive ways. Anxiety is a powerful and useful emotion that we do not want to get rid of. However, we do need to learn how to interpret anxious signals, direct thoughts and regulate our experiences so that anxiety equips versus overwhelms us. Together, we can gently untangle the patterns that spiral us toward anxiety or fear-fullness.

Tangled Minds Psychotherapy
Registered Psychotherapist, MA, RP, RCC
Anxiety is a normal part of the human experience, but it becomes a disorder when it begins to dictate how we live. We often find ourselves trapped in patterns of avoidance - changing our behaviors at work, with friends, or in our relationships just to escape uncomfortable feelings. When these patterns start shrinking your world, professional treatment becomes vital to help you reclaim your life.
Anxiety is a mismatch between our ancient "mid-brain" and our modern "pre-frontal cortex." Your brain’s threat detection system (the amygdala) is millions of years old and cannot always distinguish between a physical predator and an imagined catastrophe. When we visualize a stressful scenario, our body responds with a flood of adrenaline and cortisol as if the threat were real. This "evolutionary glitch" traps us in a loop where our brilliant imagination accidentally keeps our survival system in a state of constant, exhausting vigilance.
My approach to treatment targets the four stages of the anxiety response: Stimulus, Emotion, Cognition, and Behavior. We work to "down-regulate" your nervous system through physiological tools like structured breathing and sensory grounding. By strengthening your executive function through mindfulness, we build the "mental muscle" necessary to catch an anxiety spiral in real-time, allowing you to choose a new direction rather than falling back into old habits.
Effective therapy involves more than just insight; it requires action. We use Exposure Therapy and goal-setting to gradually face the things you’ve been avoiding, proving to your brain that you are capable of handling discomfort. We also integrate Self-Compassion and Mentalization to help you sit with difficult emotions without needing to "fix" or flee from them. By targeting thoughts, emotions, and behaviors simultaneously, we move away from short-term avoidance and toward a long-term, value-driven life.
Recovery from an anxiety disorder is significant work that involves re-patterning how your brain responds to stress. My role is to be your guide—teaching you the skills, helping you navigate the predictable pitfalls, and providing a safe space to process the roots of your pain. While there are no overnight fixes, these evidence-based interventions offer a clear, reliable path toward a life that is no longer defined by fear.
