Quitting smoking can be challenging, especially when it is connected to stress, emotional regulation, or long-standing habits. I support individuals who are motivated to reduce or stop smoking by helping them understand the emotional and behavioral patterns linked to nicotine use.
My approach focuses on strengthening self-awareness, building healthier coping strategies, and increasing motivation for change. Where appropriate, supportive techniques such as mindfulness and guided relaxation may be integrated to help manage cravings and stress. The process is paced, respectful, and tailored to each individual’s readiness and goals.

Once people discover a behaviour that becomes a habit, such as smoking, stopping can sometimes seem impossible. When people engage in addictive behaviours, they feel as if they are unable to control their actions. They may also feel distressed or anxious if they were to abstain from the behaviour. Due to the perceived inability to control actions, people often feel disempowered and hopeless, which significantly impacts happiness and wellbeing. In therapy, rather than solely focusing on the detrimental effects of smoking, we focus on the purpose and function of the behaviour. People frequently engage in addictive behaviours due to experiencing beneficial effects. If the behaviour would fail to be reinforcing, they would have no reason to continue with the addiction. Once people acknowledge the purpose of the addictive behaviour, they often view their situation through a compassionate, rather than judgmental lens. Gaining insight and self-compassion are essential ingredients for change and growth.
Another fundamental aspect of therapy is gaining insight into the cause of an addiction. People with addictions often engage in dysfunctional behaviours in order to compensate for something that is lacking in their lives.
The addiction may also be linked to past events, such as trauma or abuse. As a result, we explore the underlying cause of the addiction in order to assist with targeting core issues. With the incorporation of multiple treatment models, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness approaches clients learn to sit with uncomfortable thoughts and feelings that accompany the addiction.
Over time they learn that having urges does not mean they have to act on them. Instead, they learn how to replace the urges with adaptive coping styles. As they gain control over their addiction, they often feel a sense of empowerment and strength, which instils hope for a new and improved future.

I offer art therapy to support those seeking to stop smoking, drawing from both my personal experience and professional expertise. Through creative expression, you can explore the emotional and psychological triggers behind your smoking habit, externalize those feelings, and gain insight into the underlying patterns. I integrate aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), along with mindfulness and body-based practices, to help you shift thought patterns, manage cravings, and cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness. This holistic approach supports you in breaking free from old habits, building healthier coping strategies, and reclaiming control over your choices.

The Okanagan is British Columbia's lake-and-vineyard interior region, anchored by Kelowna and including Vernon, Penticton, and a string of lakeside communities that mix agriculture, wine tourism, and tech growth in one of Canada's most popular retirement destinations. The region's mental health picture includes seasonal tourism economy stress, wildfire and smoke-season anxiety after repeated severe fire years, and the isolation some newcomers and retirees feel after relocating. Therapy access centres on Kelowna's growing practitioner community, with Interior Health providing public services and telehealth extending reach across the valley's smaller communities.
