Therapist, MBACP Prof Dip
Emotional abuse can be deeply damaging, even when there are no visible signs on the outside. It can involve manipulation, control, criticism, intimidation, gaslighting, humiliation, or repeated experiences of feeling diminished or psychologically trapped. My approach focuses on understanding the impact of these experiences, processing what has happened, and rebuilding a stronger sense of self, clarity, and emotional safety.

I support clients who have experienced emotional abuse in recognizing patterns such as manipulation, invalidation, or control, and in rebuilding a sense of self. Our work focuses on restoring boundaries, reconnecting with your inner experience, and reducing the internalized self-doubt that often lingers after these dynamics.

Emotional abuse is a pattern of behaviour used by one person to gain and maintain power and control over another. Unlike physical abuse, it leaves no visible scars, but its impact on a person's mental health, self-esteem, and sense of reality can be deeply damaging and long-lasting.
Common Signs of Emotional Abuse
Constant Criticism & Belittling: Insults, name-calling, mocking, or undermining your intelligence, appearance, or abilities, often disguised as "jokes."
Gaslighting: Denying your reality, making you doubt your memory, perception, or sanity (e.g., "That never happened," or "You're imagining things").
Isolation: Trying to cut you off from friends, family, or other support networks so you become entirely dependent on the abuser.
Control & Monitoring: Demanding to know where you are at all times, checking your phone or emails, or controlling your finances and decisions.
Blame & Shifting Responsibility: Making you feel responsible for their moods, actions, or abusive behaviour (e.g., "Look what you made me do").
The Silent Treatment or Withholding: Punishing you by ignoring you, withholding affection, or refusing to communicate until you comply.
Understanding the Impact
Being subjected to emotional abuse over time can cause someone to lose confidence in their own judgment, feel constantly anxious or "walk on eggshells," and internalise the abuser's criticisms.
Remember: Emotional abuse is never your fault, and you do not have to navigate it alone. Support is available.

Emotional abuse is an often hidden or hard to pinpoint type of abuse that may occur in our adult relationships, those with our parents growing up, or both. One definition of emotional abuse includes psychological (i.e. non-physical) behaviors such as threats, insults, constant monitoring or “checking in,” controlling, shaming, humiliation, intimidation, isolation or ignoring behaviors.
You may also be dealing with childhood emotional abuse which can be defined as, 'sustained, repetitive, inappropriate emotional response to the child’s experience of emotion and its accompanying expressive behavior’. Healing emotional abuse allows us to create new blueprints for moving forward with new outcomes and to create new relationships with ourselves and others.
Healing involves speaking our truth, learning about connecting to our emotions, boundary setting, connecting to our bodies and beginning to create new ways of building loving safe relationships with ourselves and others. Depending upon your own history we may make use of variety of tools to heal, including somatic work, trauma work, journaling, boundary setting, inner child work, family systems work, art therapy, or many other paths that can lead to reclaiming your truth.
