Chrissie Chua- Ly van manh

Counselor/Therapist, LMHC-D, LPC
As a parent myself, I understand how challenging and overwhelming parenthood can be. I offer support to parents navigating the emotional, relational, and identity shifts that come with raising children, especially during the early years of parenthood. I have a particular focus on supporting mothers experiencing postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, and the emotional intensity that can come with major hormonal, physical, and life changes after having a baby. During this time, so much can feel out of balance- your body is adjusting, your relationships with partners may shift, sleep and self-care become limited, and you are constantly adapting to your child’s changing developmental stages. Parenting often comes with a deep desire to “do the right thing,” while also being surrounded by an overwhelming amount of external advice, opinions, and expectations. Many parents I work with feel anxious, uncertain, and afraid of being judged or making mistakes, even while doing their best to care for their child and manage their household. In our work together, I aim to provide a grounded, reassuring space where you can feel supported rather than judged. We work on reducing anxiety, strengthening confidence, and reconnecting you with your own instincts. I believe that parents, especially mothers, are often their child’s greatest advocate and expert, even when self-doubt makes that hard to feel. My role is to help you trust yourself again, feel less alone, and move through each stage of parenting with more clarity, compassion, and steadiness.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, MA, LMHC
Many parents would agree that though they read the books, and took the classes, and maybe even spent time taking care of children before having their own, they still felt unprepared for parenthood. There are as many reasons why as there are parents, but at the end of the day, it's impossible to be completely prepared for parenting because you just don't know what you don't know. And when you do know it, you still may not know how to make that knowledge work. Parenting, even at the best of times, can be exhausting and stressful, but add on all the other things that complicate our lives - careers, money worries, romantic, platonic and family relationships, other people's expectations and judgments, the lack of support, single parenthood, you name it - and things get harder and harder. And what if your child has special or different needs? It's not easy being a kid, and watching your kid struggle, either with health issues, or mental health, or academics or peer relationships, or literally any of the countless other things that kids have to navigate, can feel like an impossible task. And on top of that you're somehow supposed to take care of yourself and pay the bills? Well look, I can't take those stressors away, but I can help you figure out how to navigate the (maybe literal, maybe figurative) sh!tstorm that is modern parenting, take gentler care of yourself and cultivate a life that honors your values and your hopes and wishes for yourself, your family and your child.

Parenting often brings up your own history, triggers, and fears about “getting it wrong.” I help parents understand their child’s behavior through a nervous‑system and attachment lens, respond with more regulation and consistency, and parent in ways that align with your values rather than just repeating old patterns.

Newark is one of the most economically and culturally complex cities in the northeastern United States — a majority Black and Latino city with deep roots in jazz, civil rights history, and a long experience of disinvestment — and its therapy community frequently addresses the intersection of systemic inequity, racial trauma, and the psychological effects of urban poverty. The city has a significant Portuguese and Brazilian community alongside long-established African American and Puerto Rican populations, and multilingual and culturally affirming therapists serve critical access roles in a city where language and cultural barriers remain significant. Rutgers New Jersey Medical School provides institutional training and resources, while University Hospital Newark anchors the city's clinical mental health infrastructure. Newark's proximity to New York City means some residents also access therapy across the Hudson, while a growing independent therapy community has developed within the city itself.
