Depression can look like exhaustion or a lack of motivation. There’s often a flatness or a disinterest in things that were once pleasurable. Depression is often described as a sustained feeling of sadness, pointlessness or grief. It can be intense or subtle but it is ongoing (generally for a number of weeks or longer). There is often a feeling of worthlessness. Together, we can discuss ways to treat the depression. I have a number of tools, including wonderful colleagues, with whom to collaborate, in order for you to feel better and be yourself again.

Depression can make life feel muted - relationships grow distant, motivation fades, and the world loses color. My approach looks beyond symptoms to the emotional and relational patterns that keep you feeling stuck or alone. Together, we uncover how attachment, self-criticism, and unmet needs shape your experience of sadness and disconnection. Whether depression has followed loss, betrayal, or chronic stress, therapy offers a path back to clarity, steadiness, and genuine connection - with yourself and with those you love.

Katherine Rabinowitz
Licensed Psychoanalyst, LP, M.A., NCPsyA
Depression is insidious. We don't always know where it comes from. Like with anxiety, some people are born with a predisposition to see the glass half-empty rather than half-full. It feels awful. It slows you down. It makes it hard to feel motivated to go after what you want. It makes it hard to enjoy the things you are surrounded by and have the opportunity to take advantage of. If it becomes severe (such that you've stopped going to work or have a hard time getting out of bed) I will refer you for an evaluation for medication. Much has changed in this arena in the last couple of decades and there are medications that might help you out of the morass and without the complications of side effects that are associated with some of the earlier drugs.
However, hopefully it won't come to that. My aim is to help you figure out what's getting in your way, emotionally, and causing you to feel depressed. If you are motivated to accept new insights to your habitual way of thinking, it's possible to start feeling less depressed and more willing to be present in the world.
There's no magic. I wish there were. Some people come in expecting a "solution" to their problems in five easy lessons, but it doesn't work that way. Therapy is a process, and it applies to depression as well as any other condition or state of mind you might find yourself in. But it's rarely impossible if you're willing to make the commitment to work through your stumbling blocks, you're likely to begin to climb up out of the darkness you feel you're trapped in. I'd like to help you do that.

Dr. Walter J. Matweychuk
Psychologist, Ph.D.
Loss, failure, or undeserved plight are associated with depression. I will teach you how you disturb yourself when you experience these things and how to stop disturbing yourself by learning to change what you can change and accept what you cannot. There are occasions when people have pure biologically based depressions, but often distorted thinking and rigid attitudes are major factors in depression.

Who wants to feel better?
You, or else you wouldn't be looking at psychotherapists websites. But wait, there's more...maybe you're not sure you can feel better. Maybe you've never been to a psychotherapist before & this is all new to you or was something that "other people" did.

Ms. Lorna Hayim-Baker
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, "R"LCSW
Depression is dangerous. I work hard to figure out what is triggering my patient's depression. Does it run in their family? Is it situational? I try to determine if my patient has a mood and/or personality disorder before recommending a psychiatrist I ask them to seriously exercise, meditate, and make sure they are eating well. I am very fussy who I will recommend as a psychiatrist when my patients need to be evaluated for medications. I only give out one prescribing professional because I met with him in person and have a professional relationship with him.

Daniel Pagano
Licensed Psychoanalyst, PhD, LP, SCC
Together, we approach depression as an alchemical stage—a breakdown of old structures for something new and authentic to emerge. Exploring unconscious conflicts and archetypal themes, we guide you toward shadow reintegration for a richer, more resilient existence reflecting your inner depth. Depression is a fierce guardian, slowing you to signal misalignment with your true self. We decipher the symbolic messages in low mood and lethargy to understand your soul's request, transforming heaviness into fuel for profound self-discovery and spiritual awakening. We view depression not as a symptom to eliminate, but as a "dark night of the soul" inviting inward reflection. Through a Jungian lens, this descent is a necessary journey into the psyche's underworld to retrieve lost vitality and meaning. Honoring this process clears the path for genuine transformation and a renewed connection to life.

Maria T. Alonso, Ph.D.
Psychologist
I assist individuals dealing with depression by using a blend of psychodynamic insights, evidence based practices and a strength-based approach. Fundamentally, I use a psychodynamic lens to help the client explore underlying emotional conflicts and past experiences that may contribute to their current struggles, fostering deeper self-awareness and insight. Regarding evidence based practices, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)to help to address negative thought patterns and behaviors, providing clients with practical tools to manage their symptoms effectively. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can also be helpful to incorporate into treatment given that depression often involves avoiding situations, people, or activities that could trigger negative emotions. ACT helps individuals confront and engage with these avoided aspects of life in a mindful and values-driven manner, reducing avoidance and increasing overall life engagement. By focusing on clients’ inherent strengths, passions and past successes, I also help them re-build a sense of self-efficacy, confidence and resilience which can impact and improve depressive symptoms. Lastly, I commonly develop collaborative relationships with clients physicians in order to offer a more integrated treatment plan that supports the clients healing.

Manhattan is one of the most therapist-dense places in the world, with independent practices concentrated on the Upper West Side, in Chelsea, Midtown, and the East Village, serving an extraordinarily high per-capita demand for mental health care. The borough's concentration of finance, media, law, and healthcare professionals generates consistent demand for therapists experienced with high-stakes careers, perfectionism, and the emotional costs of extreme professional ambition. Manhattan also serves as the entry point for many immigrants from Latin America, Southeast Asia, and West Africa, and multilingual therapists make up a significant portion of the local clinical community. Columbia University Irving Medical Center, NYU Langone, and numerous academic training clinics provide institutional anchors and training pipelines for the borough's large private practice ecosystem.
