Exeter, England therapist: Julie Jenner, counselor/therapist
Social Anxiety

Julie Jenner

Counsellor/Therapist, BA(Hons), NCS Senior Accredited
Social anxiety seems like such a current issue to me, and I see people struggling under the weight of it at times in all areas of my life. We are bombarded with how we are supposed to do this thing called life, our values, appearance, views and so on are brought into question and there feels like there is no escape from it. What this can bring about is a fear of being seen, a fear of not getting it right, or not fitting in. We can start to question the safety of being out in the world where others might see that you are doing it wrong - or more realistic not doing it how they would. It can bring limitations in your life which stop you from doing what you want, stop you from connecting with others, stop you getting the most out of each day. Believe you can change this and know you do not have to do it alone. Asking for support is one of the most important choices you might make today.

Social Anxiety and Social Anorexia cases have had documented increase with lower practice of intimacy in our current culture. In addition, social isolation registers in the same part of the brain that processes pain and we are biological beings that need social engagement for health and stasis. CPTSD and intensive health needs can contribute to a sense of growing isolation or challenges with over stimulation, limiting social interactions. There could be grief due to that or ease if it aligns with a neurobiology that doesn't prefer social interactions in person. There are many creative ways to connect these days. Utilizing Havening, Brainspotting, Polyvagal Theory, Safe and Sound Protocol, IFS, Attachment Theory, and optionally Energy Work to address adrenal fatigue, clients may stretching into experiences of more social engagement and working through trauma or anxiety along the way. This work combines a sensitive understanding of social systems and the pressures that come with adapting to them.
