Anxiety or Fears

Laird Counselling Services

Registered Psychotherapist, BA, MACP, RP
There are many different types of anxiety and it manifests a little differently for everyone. It can be an underlying sense of dread or a full on panic attack. It can show up as chronic worrying, insomnia, being distracted or preoccupied, irritability, inability to focus, and nervousness. Sometimes you do not even know what you are anxious about and sometimes it is clearly evident. However it shows up for you, it is very uncomfortable and impacts your ability to be present, perform well, and maybe even enjoy your life. If anxiety has been affecting you, you might be ready to start talking about it. Are you worried about the future or feel that something bad is about to happen? Do you worry about what people think? Do you have trouble public speaking or being in crowds? Do you often think about a troubling incident from the past? Do you analyze conversations you just had with others? Do you get sweaty hands and a racing heart? Do you ever feel nervous for no reason? These are just a few of the ways that anxiety affects our thoughts and feelings. Anxiety is a healthy human emotion and it is normal to feel anxious sometimes. However, if it persistent throughout the day and long-lasting, you might really be suffering from chronic anxiety. Coping with chronic anxiety might cause you to turn to things like emotional eating, alcohol, substances, shopping, or other activities to distract you from the discomfort of feeling anxious. At Laird Counselling Services, we understand how exhausting and upsetting it can be to deal with anxiety. We have helped many people manage anxiety and feel better. Please reach out for a consultation to learn more about how we can help you.

Anxiety is a natural bodily response to our environment, but it can sometimes appear when we don't want it to. I often use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in my practice, but like to pull from other modalities when it appears necessary for your treatment goals to be reached. We will often focus on how our thoughts and the environment around us, impact our emotions and behaviours that might not be suiting us. Together, we will work towards your specific goals in order to create change in your everyday life. Schedule a free 15-minute consultation to connect with any questions you may have.

Anxiety is one of the most prevalent and challenging forms of human suffering. It can also vary in intensity from mild tension and apprehension to feelings of fear and terror. At times, feelings of pain and shame about anxiety may be so great that we may wish to die to escape. We also know that anxiety takes many different forms. For example, some people can have intense and sudden physical symptoms, known as panic attacks. Some people with social anxiety can become particularly concerned about social situations, fearing that people might see them as inadequate or inferior and, as a consequence, reject or avoid them. Anxiety is an important and essential emotion; however, when anxiety causes significant distress or when anxious behaviour impairs a person’s ability to function—when anxiety negatively affects a person’s life—we call this an anxiety disorder. As if feeling anxious and stressed were not enough, we can also become fearful of these emotions and try to suppress or avoid them, even becoming self-critical for feeling overly anxious. Together, we will work inwards to the root of anxiety and collaboratively manage the anxiety's intensity levels.

Feeling afraid and anxious can be overwhelming and consuming. It's like being in a constant state of alertness, with your mind racing and your body on edge, anticipating danger or harm. Physically, you might experience a racing heart, sweating, trembling, or shortness of breath. Mentally, you may feel a sense of dread, worry or unease, tightness in the chest, and unable to shake off the feeling of impending danger. It can be exhausting, affecting your ability to concentrate, sleep, or enjoy things you once loved. Fear and anxiety can also lead to avoidance behaviors, as you try to steer clear of anything that triggers those feelings. Being distressed like this can impact every aspect of your life, with seemingly no end in sight. Daniel suffered through 7 nervous breakdowns between the ages of 18 to 23 - over 35 years ago giving him deep personal experience with anxiety and fear. So, Daniel understands.
