Registered Psychotherapist, Student RP (Qualifying), RPC-C (Candidate)
One of my favourite analogies to explain the experience of depression is that depression is like a giant Yeti sitting on top of you all day long. It makes getting up, doing daily tasks, interacting with others, and even sitting extremely hard and tiring. As such, and for many other reasons, walking the path with depression can be profoundly challenging. At the same time, some research suggests that depression has an evolutionary function, namely, to slow us down and focus all our energy on solving the complex problem that started the depressive episode. In essence, it forces us to stop and reflect.
In therapy, I support clients to explore their relationship with depression, develop tools to stay regulated when it shows up, get curious if it has an important message for them, and take action towards their goals (which may include responding to depression messages). In my personal and clinical experience, I have seen that depression can be an opportunity for life reflection and profound personal growth.

Life can feel overwhelming with lots of ups and downs. Depression can feel like a bottomless pit, I offer a foot-hold or hand out of the pit of depression – often a big part of this may be rediscovering or integrating self care.

It can be difficult to recognize when you're experiencing more than just a temporary low mood. Depression can sometimes appear suddenly, or it might gradually develop. You might notice a general tiredness, or perhaps a deeper sadness and a lack of interest in things you once enjoyed. Common signs include a lack of enthusiasm for life, consistently low mood, low energy levels, increased irritability, a lack of motivation to do things, and difficulty concentrating.
When these feelings of depression continue, it's understandable to want to keep them to yourself and try to push through. You might feel like you're the only one going through this, worried that others wouldn't truly understand, or that you'd be bothering them with your problems.
It's important to remember that feeling down is a normal human experience, and everyone has their off days. However, if you find that feelings of sadness, a lack of energy, and a sense of being listless are persistent and not improving, it could be beneficial to speak with someone.
At Laird Counselling, we provide a confidential and supportive environment where you can openly discuss these difficult thoughts and emotions. We understand that taking this step can be challenging, and we will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Our approach is tailored to meet your specific needs and help you understand and navigate these feelings. Please feel free to contact us to learn more about how we can support you in working through depression.
