Anxiety or Fears

Sarah Elizabeth McMillan

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, MA, MSW, RSW
Mental health support for physical illness, pain and uncertainty. Apprehension and worry about the future, hypervigilance towards body sensations and re-living the past are common distressing patterns. We know that anxiety, depression and chronic stress often occur in tandem with physical illness but can be overlooked or we may fear addressing these mental health challenges directly. We often take our health for granted until it's called into question. And then you may find it hard to focus on anything else.

The problem isn't having fear - without it we'd be emotionally handicap. The problem is having more fear for a situation than we should have. Fortunately, there are many tools to help with this.

"The Gestalt perspective is inherently relational. Anxiety symptoms experienced in the body are understood as individual expressions of relational suffering (Roubal, Gecele, & Francesetti, 2013) when the individual’s process of contacting with other people lacks spontaneity and fluidity. In such cases, the style of interpersonal contact is rigidly distorted by fixed relational patterns, and needs are not being met within relationships. Relating to others and oneself according to a need to “do the right thing” could be one example of such distortions, narrowing the possibilities of experience and of creative adjustment (Robine, 2013). The flow of figure/ground formation becomes disrupted, because the person fears taking risks to find creative ways toward mutually satisfactory contact. While the arousal is present, the organism is inhibited or even paralyzed. In therapy, support is needed to transform anxiety into fluid and creative excitement. The support comes from the therapeutic relationship, in which the needs of the client are recognized and validated. In the safe therapeutic situation, the client’s inhibition is reduced and the arousal of her/his organism can be directed towards an expression of relationally felt needs. A client's experience could then be: “With the therapist I can risk being my way without judging it as right or wrong”. The paralyzing anxiety is transformed into an excitement of discovering new creative ways of contact. The client experiments with them first in the safe psychotherapeutic relationship and later also with other people (Herrera, Mstibovskyi, Roubal & Brownell, 2018)." If reading the above creates anxiety for you, you need to call me and come in feel what gestalt therapy can do. Reading about it is not helping is it? I didn't think so! Call me... let's be anxious together. You are not alone, yes I have had panic attacks before... thought I was going to die.

It is natural to experience fear and to have feelings of anxiousness. At times, it may seem that these feelings are helpful, for example they may encourage an individual to make choices that keep them safe. However, at times anxiety and fear can become stronger and overwhelming. It can get in the way of one’s life, leading one to avoid enjoyable and regular activities. If you find that anxiety is limiting your lifestyle by way of avoidance, obsessiveness or compulsiveness, therapy can be helpful by assisting you to work at your own pace to gradually ease back into activities you have not been taking part in.

As debilitating as anxiety disorders are, the good news is that they typically respond very well to treatment. Many people who seek treatment for their anxiety, move forward to lead healthy, happy and productive lives. The kind of treatment used for your anxiety all depends on the type of anxiety disorder, its severity, and the therapist’s modality of treatment. In general, most anxiety disorders are treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), medication, or a combination of the two.

In these unprecedented times in our lives many of us are dealing with feelings of great uncertainty about our individual future and how to handle and cope with life changes. Repetitive thoughts are often aligned with anxiety. Anxiety has a cyclical pattern and unless it is interrupted it will run its course, causes overwhelming feelings of fear and despair. Through a compassionate and observational lens reducing stress and anxiety will cultivate focus and clarity. Learning to connect to our senses is very grounded and can quickly break the anxiety cycle and help bring us back to our own center. Book a free consultation to see if we are a good fit.
